>In January 1976, Texas Monthly announced that Larry McMurtry had signed a contract to write a screenplay for a film adaptation.[6] Martin Scorsese, Ralph Bakshi and Oliver Stone each tried to get the film off the ground, but were unsuccessful and moved on.>During the initial development to get the film made, Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando were originally considered for the roles of Duke and Gonzo but they both grew too old.
>>216023222Brando as Dr. Gonzo could have been pretty amazing, probably better than Peter Boyle, but Benicio is actually Mexican or whatever so probably a better casting.
>>216023222>Ralph BakshiWhat could have been. That sounds awesome
Quentin Tarantino pitched a book accurate Casino Royale James Bond movie in the 90s but the studio passed
>>216023222It was made though.

The one where Arnold was going to play a crusader
Greatest movies never made? Ghostbusters.
I wonder what would have been of TDK trilogy's last film if Ledger was alive.
>>216023400Don't know exactly, but probably poorly directed.
beautiful fucking tits, man
>>216023222The film came out when I was around 13 or so, and so I bought a tie-in reprint of the paperback, movie cover, the morphed Johnny Depp image. I got about halfway in and I was completely bored with their drug culture, their trunk full of drugs, whatever it was. Right around the point that one of them is threatening to dump a toaster into the tub for "the ultimate experience" or whatever, that's exactly when my patience ran out. I cut my losses, put the boring, stupid thing down, and never picked it up again. I believe my copy was sold at a family garage sale for a dollar or so, a few years later. Based on this experience of the stupid book, I have never seen the film, and I never will.
>>216023508Do they pay you to screw that bear?
>>216023320He’s not capable of nailing the tone of the book so that’s actually a bullet dodged.
>>216023508I struggled through and the movie is worse. That being said Pynchon basically wrote a better version with inherent vice, though that movie kinda sucks too. Definitely try the book.
>>216023508Imagine the kind of dork that wrote this post.

>There have been repeated attempts to turn the book into a film. In 1982, Harold Ramis was to write and direct an adaptation, starring John Belushi as Ignatius and Richard Pryor as Burma Jones, but Belushi's death prevented this. Later, John Candy and Chris Farley were touted for the lead, but both of them, like Belushi, also died at an early age, leading many to ascribe a curse to the role of Ignatius.[17] Director John Waters was interested in directing an adaptation that would have starred Divine, who also died at an early age, as Ignatius.[18]>Various reasons are cited as to why the Soderbergh version never made it to production. They include disorganization and lack of interest at Paramount Pictures, Helen Hill the head of the Louisiana State Film Commission being murdered, and the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans.[17] When asked why the film was never made, Will Ferrell has said it is a "mystery".[23] In a 2013 interview, Soderbergh remarked "I think it's cursed. I'm not prone to superstition, but that project has got bad mojo on it."[24]
>>216024111the curse of obese drug addicts dying young
>>216023281>Benicio is actually Mexican or whatever so probably a better castingIt's been years since I read the book but iirc Gonzo was Samoan. One of the few books that made me LOL constantly. Also the high water mark moment is pure kino, whether in the book or the movie. Depp was great as Thompson.
>>216023222This movie is one of the few movies that I didn't "get". Do I have to be high watching it or on drugs?
Depp was fucking perfect though
>>216024111I thought Atuk, the Eskimo movie was the curse?
>>216024111My favorite casting would have been (young) John Goodman as Ignatius, directed by Altman. Idk who would be a good Burma Jones, Mos Def was rumored for the Soderbergh version, and I like him as an actor (he was in my fav. Chappelle show skit), but he's too lightskinned.>>216023287>Bakshi-animated Ralph Steadman drawingsWE WUZ ROBBED>>216025466He really was, ever see the behind the scenes footage of Depp hanging out with HST? Depp did a great job capturing HST's mannerisms and speaking cadence
>>216023508It’s a movie that appeals to redditors and 13 year olds who think weed is heckin amazing and that it somehow makes them rebellious drug users.
