The point of the movie is that he deeply regrets his actions, so to stay sane for decades he has to invent narratives that what he did was right and every person he killed deserved to die.In fact this is an essential truth about human psychology. Whatever situation a person is in, they will mold their sense of reality to preserve their ego and sense that they are a "good person". That's why murderers/rapists insist that they only did what they did because of being abused or whatever. It's also why that for people in unfortunate situations, people will invent narratives to imagine that they deserved to end up in those situations to preserve their "just-world fallacy"

There was an attempted coup by Communist in the 1960s there, it failed, there were reprisals against communist and suspected communist sympathizers and this snowballed into random acts of paranoid inhuman violence. I would suggest not getting into the weeds of online edgy politics "my side vs your side" stuff because thats not really the point.
