>bunch of dumb criminals in the hood>one of them realizes they're dumb and tries to organize the others >they sabotage his efforts and everything gets even worseDoes this represent reality? Or is this just Simon's weird bias?
Avon and regrettably Stringer and the upper crew Bey Stinkum etc. are the real brains. These are just low-level store front employees. The lowest on the totempole.
Like the sopranos they showed the gang members are semi competent in their crimes but also very dumb about anything else.

You should rewatch the show and actually pay attention. The entire theme of the writing is on power and respect and how they're twisted in the relationship between criminals and the criminal justice system. People like Wallace or Michael get caught up in crime because they need the power it brings to help the people close to them, but they always know deep down they're doing the wrong thing. The older people like Avon and Cutty are obsessed with respect, mostly because they see someone disrespecting them as a means to undermine their power, and in their mind, forcing them back into a life of struggling to make ends meet. It's the same thing with the cops, too. McNulty wants to be the guy to crack these massive cases because it's one of the few ways he feels in control with his personal life falling apart. Daniels is willing to take risks because nobody respects him for being dirty in the past. It's really not that hard to see it. The reason they turned on Stringer is because in the end he was just another nigga with a gun. All the talk about being different, smart, or whatever went out the window when he felt powerless to do anything about Clay Davis- resorting to wanting to kill him to take his power back.
