Real talk, did cinema as an artform peak in the silent era?
>>
Yes. Art died after WW2.
>>
>>216025006
Humans peaked in the 20th century
We are rapidly degenerating. People are getting uglier, fatter, sicker, dumber and generally worse in every aspect
>>
>>216024943
The silent era is underrated.

I wouldn't quite go that far but yes, the introduction of sound and all the bulky, heavy equipment needed for it kinda caused the development of cinema to go backwards and stagnate for a couple of decades. Every got way more set and studio based, camera moves became way more locked down and simplified and elaborate art direction went the way of the fucking dodo.

I think we got over that hump in the 60s/70s though but yeah, a lot of early sound stuff kinda sucks compared to the late silent era.
>>
>>216024943
Silent film engages the audience's imagination. Modern movies show everything without asking you to engage with the work. This makes watching silent films a more rewarding experience.
>>
>>216024943
I don't know, watching a movie without sounds is like fighting without an arm. Yeah I saw Aquaman through another guy's phone while he was wearing headphones during a travel and it was a somehow good experience, but I don't know...
>>
>>216025257
Maybe you should try watching some films that were intentionally made to be silent like in >>216025211. Or, here’s another one https://youtu.be/ZNAHcMMOHE8?si=gs-QvLW0C72VhNTZ.

It’s not cheating to watch it with the music, btw.

NO; LIKE EVERYTHING IN THE XX CENTURY, CINEMA REACHED ITS CVLMEN IN THE NINETEEN HUNDRED SIXTIES; DESPITE TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS SINCE THEN, EVERYTHING HAS BEEN DEGRADING.
>>
>>216025162
Humans peaked centuries before that.
Here's a hint, the world fair wasn't a fair. Those were real cities.
>>
>>216024943
Honestly, yeah. Cinema thrived without sound AND without colour, when it started gaining more complex technical qualities it became soulless hence 100 years later it is almost dead

qtards think images from the world fair in chicago was how america actually looked. They believe in an ancient forgotton empire called the tartaria that spanned the globe or something
>>
>>216024943
Yes.
>>
Yes, due to the limitations of the technology filmmakers had to be infinitely more creative and ambitious

No filmmaker comes close nowadays, the only ones I can think of are Charles Lube, Massimo Titti and David Lynch (RIP)
>>
>>216027028
lol wtf there are so many batshit beliefs these days
>>
>>216024943
cinema peaked in the 50s and 60s
>>
>>216028427
Are the first two real?
>>
>>216028473

Yes, they're part of /tv/'s top 5 directors along with Woo-Bum Kon, Big Shit and Anal Smithee
>>
>>216025257
Silent films were accompanied by music

Here's a book by one of the most highly respected academics of the 20th century - Jacques Barzun about exactly that. Called "Use and Abuse of Art" (1974). It's barely 100 pages, if that and explains exactly what destroyed Art and Science from a man who watched it happen from beginning to end.

Real talk, its the same story of art evolving into a product. At first, cinema was something new, so people didnt have any expectations and everything was looking fresh and interesting. Cinema makers were allowed to be creative to their hearts extent. Inevitably, an industry sprouted from this, so art and creativity had to co-exist with logistics and artistic assembly line logic. Eventually logistics and assembly line logic took total control, and the passion of the art became a myth.
Same case with videogames as well.
That being said, I do believe that Metropolis and Napoleone are still one of the most technically impressive movies of all time

Yeah
A lot of 30s movies are just a lot of prattling on about the dumb plot, way less interesting than 20s movies
>>
>>216024943
>no need for obnoxious dialogue every 2 seconds
>no need for CGI for ridiculous action scenes
>no need for the last ultra-advanced camera nor the perfect lightning
>no need for 4 billion dollar budget
>no need for 10,000 workers
Gives you primordial fear, your blood memory remembers the apex predator from an dark forgotten era.

I swear, when I was young I thought the actors of the 1920s were exaggerating about the "death of cinema and art" when sound became the standard, now that I've been comparing silent films with sound films, I totally agree with those actors, they were prophets.
>>
Generally the less talking in a movie, the better.
Parts of Gone With the Wind resemble a silent movie, where she's escaping Atlanta and culminating in returning home to find her mother dead
>>

Humanity peaked during classical antiquity

i need recommendations of youtube channels that show restored old movies

Social media gave idiots a platform. While scientists and intellectuals have editors and peer reviewers, influencers and podcasters can spout whatever bullshit they want with zero accountability. The old system is corrupt and imperfect too but at least there's some filtering by people who have dedicated countless hours to study the subject they're dealing with. That alone makes a serious difference in the quality of information.
>>
Humanity have not peaked yet. 21st century is the best one so far, followed by the 20th. The 22nd will be absolutely awesome and things are constantly getting better.
>>
>>216025220

And don't forget the rise of musicals and romcons. Fuck the musicals. I hate when I find a movie from the 1950s with an interesting premise, then I watch it only to find out it's a musical.
I'm talking about Down Argentine Way.

Lmao, retard.
I guess 2 world wars and a great depression were also better than what came before, right?

Just started my silent movie arc. There are a lot of quality remastered dvds available at bargain prices. What a time to be alive.
