I want to strangle every pretentious european director to death, especially those that manage to somehow find some semblance of mainstream success. Keep that nonsense in europe
>>
>the latest Lanthimos/Emma Stone slop
after dropping this collaboration 5 years ago I have no interest in this movie

I just don't know how these people get funded. Where is this money coming from?

They brought back VistaVision for this shit?
>>
I feel like it would be relatively easy to actually make this good.
>>
just skip ahead to the end like everyone else, it's fine for a fifteen minute watch

Apparently it's a remake of this Korean movie, which can only be better

STGP is pure kino
>>
>>216026613
I thought it was very good, 8/10. Better than most movies I have watched at the cinema in 2025.
>>
>>216028038
Out of curiosity, if you're willing to share this, how old are you?
>Better than most movies I have watched at the cinema in 2025.
What other movies have you been watching?

I thought the movie was so poorly written and directed that it made me angry watching it. The theater I watched it in, where people routinely clap for a film, nobody clapped. It's listed as a comedy, and nobody laughed.
>>
>>216026682
Some USAID money was funding this. Theres also EU arts money.
They actually take money from labourers digging ditches in the rain and give it to cum-chugging arthouse directors so they can make shit that not many people want to see. Its fucking sick.
>>
>>216026682
>They brought back VistaVision for this shit?
It's a humiliation ritual, just destroying the legacy of a respected format for the sake of it.
It's like when they hire a black woman for a prestigious job and make a big deal about it being "the first black woman to x!"
It doesn't matter that it's complete shit, they just want to pat themselves on the back as they destroy something beautiful.

nigga never seen a yorgos movie before and gets this mad about it online. anyone crying US politics itt is also a massive fag
>>
>>216028362
>how old are you?
39. I've seen maybe a dozen movies at the cinema this year. The Brutalist didn't come out until January earlier this year in my country, so that is still my favourite movie of the year so far. I even paid to watch it twice in one week in IMAX. People here seemed to like Bugonia judging by the audience reaction when the credits rolled, laughing, etc.
>>
>>216028443
>nigga never seen a yorgos movie before
I've seen Poor Things too, which at least has some aesthetic value even if the writing is terrible.

best of this year for me has been Phoenician Scheme

The director needs to learn how to control a scene, and that setting the camera down in place and letting the actors go awkwardly back and forth with no cuts is not a winning formula for every kind of movie.

The modern film director seems to leave it all up to the actors to carry the movie, with no vision of how it should turn out.
>>
>>216026613
I hate the square ratio. I get what he's trying to do but it's just so fucking lameee
>>
>>216028608
it’s very funny to say that yorgos lanthimos of all people doesn’t have a distinct vision or consistent autistic presentation of his movies. he has been this way since Dogtooth in 2009.
>>
>>216028649
He has no idea what he's doing. At this point, he's just hiding behind Emma Stone and trying to emulate other movies like an autistic kid masking their autism symptoms.
Arthouse people have no taste so he's covered on some level by these leeches that suck up anything "indie" and so he can fail this hard with no consequence

If you have functioning artistic sensibilities and general pattern recognition by the time you're a late teen you should be bored of the majority of tropes and narrative plots found in mainstream Hollywood type films, and have a hunger for something that represents or at least attempts to represent certain themes and feelings found in life that are rarely found in modern mainstream films.

Your lack of developing this faculty has lead to you developing an ego defense mechanism that has concluded that these films are inherently meaningless filled with "pretentious" themes and the people who enjoy them are simply pretending, as to gain some kind of imaginary clout, as your crippled brain projects the idea that these people are operating from a mode such as your own in which everything is done for the sake of inflating one's own ego.

Are you trying to tell me that this movie isn't a bunch of generic tropes and homages and actually has something new and interesting to say, through unique and inventive direction? Please, God, explain that in depth

I didn't see Bugonia yet but I have seen five other films of his. He has a distinct directorial style. Unique direction? Maybe. Inventive direction? No. He's not an avant-garde director. He's an auteur, but with a style accessible enough for mainstream success.
>bunch of generic tropes and homages
I know he's not a soap opera director, so please explain the generic tropes and homages present in Bugonia.

It wasn't a good movie by any stretch of the imagination, but the premise was mildly creative and the thin crazy guy managed to play a somewhat convinving schizophrenic alien conspiracy theorist in the first half of the movie. I smiled a little bit in the initial interrogation scene with emma stone, and even her reaction to the situation was believable within the realm of her 'independent boss girl' character. The gore and murder parts in the second half really didn't add anything to the story except unnecessarily make it darker than it had to be, and they obviously killed the autistic sidekick because it would've been too cliche to have him turn on the skinny guy out of a change of heart. If I was making the movie I would've left out the gore and murdering, kept the two guys as bumbling villains, and created some kind of climax involving them being out in a field during the lunar eclipse with the cops looking for them and she reveals herself as the alien or whatever.

5/10 movie not worth going to the cinema for, but I went on a date and got laid because of it so I'm biased.

I think the only asian film I could see value in an alternate american take on it is big man japan, but i'm sure they would still fuck it up

It's a good movie, and it's better than the original film even. It's not amazing, but I'd say it's about a 7/10 picture.
I don't know what anon meant ITT by "poorly written". Maybe it's because I watched the Korean version first but the Lanthimos version actually had a much better script that removed the majority of very contrived or useless crap. Main character acted like a believable schizo, maybe only his brother's suicide felt a bit unearned, there were implications but not exactly enough. It was visually pretty, and had a great soundtrack. The problem I have personally is that this just Lanthimos being his typical self, he kinda hit a wall. This is very similar material to Killing of a Sacred, although executed in way with a bit more mainstream appeal. He needs to reinvent himself again, hopefully the filmmaking pause he announced he will use to do exactly that.

The difference is that Save the Green Planet is hilarious genre bending while Bugonia is just miserable misanthropy. Yorgos hasn't made anything worth watching since Poor Things and even that was overhyped.
