Brothers, every time I revisit The Young Pope, I am overwhelmed by how profoundly traditional it is. I genuinely don’t understand how more people haven’t recognized this as the most faithful depiction of Catholic life in modern media.Take, for instance, that beautiful subplot with the nuns having sex with refugees from the Middle East. So many viewers miss the deeply ancient spirituality at work there. The way the sisters opened their hearts, bodies, and hospitality to the newcomers reminded me of those medieval accounts where charity meant welcoming the stranger without hesitation, without fear. And the way the show places this right beside the sisters’ earlier choreographed dance routine to "good time girl", honestly, it moved me. Their fluidity, their unity, their joyful abandon… you could practically hear the echoes of forgotten convent traditions. It felt so authentically monastic I almost teared up.And honestly, the most beautiful moment in the whole series is when the Holy Father gently accepts Cardinal Gutiérrez’s homosexuality and simply tells him that “God is love” while “Halo” by Beyoncé swells in the background. I haven’t seen a pope embody that kind of ancient, apostolic mercy since… well, ever. This show restored something in me. The devotion. The mystery. The beauty. The uncompromising seriousness. Truly, if people want to understand what Catholicism really is, this is the blueprint. It honestly renewed my faith. It showed me what authority looks like when it’s both severe and merciful, terrifying and tender. That combination is what built cathedrals, converted nations, and, frankly, what we’ve lost.
