>German expressionist film about forsaking God but it's an animeJapan doesn't make anything remotely comparable to this anymore, and that makes me sad.
>>216047332It's criminal how underutilized Yoshitaka Amano is in the anime industry.
>>216047412not a lot of talents were properly utilized in anime desu. whenever somebody with a very distinct voice does something in that medium i am always left with a thirst for more, because it's often too ephemeral to have as much weight as it should have. that's why shit like op's pic rel or texh stands out so much. it's definitely more homogenized than western animation, especially nowadays sadly.manga is a different story altogether of course
>>216047332Leave it to China.
>forsaking godThe internet meme that Oshii was mad about not being Catholic anymore and the other meme about how he doesn't know anything about this film are both overblown. He personally said the film was akin to Saul on the road to Damascus. The little girl turns into an adult woman after she goes running after Jesus and falls into the water getting baptized for fucks sake, op.
>>216047698>Leave it to China.Something I found out when looking into Chink cartoons after getting into the Ne Zha movies earlier this year is that 1. Chinks crave spectacle and technical prowess more than anyone in the world, and are very good compared to everyone else at it but more importantly2. Chinks can't into serious or dramatic animation, they have this bizarre fixation on vulgar humor that seems to be cultural, and finally that 3. they are obsessed with CG because of Kung Fu Panda, but also because they never really had a traditional animation industry due to war and Maoism taking its toll on the arts of the country when traditional animation was flourishing abroad in the U.S, Europe, Japan, USSR etc.
>>216047856They'll probably get there. Soon-ish.
>>216047856> but also because they never really had a traditional animation They had some sick cartoons in the past
>>216047743>He personally said the film was akin to Saul on the road to Damascus.I fucking know that retard, I'm a Catholic myself. The movie is about mankind forsaking God and finding him again in the aftermath of both a self-inflicted and divine cataclysm.
I'm literally in the theater arcade having just seen this gorgeosity of a film. About to get wings and a beer.
>>216048264>the theater arcadeWhat is your high score in Terminator Salvation
>>216048066>Journey to the WestI thought it was a joke they constantly remake that and Romance of the Three Kingdoms.>Japan doesn't make anything remotely comparable to this anymore, and that makes me sad. That's because they stopped plagiarizing Western art, so now they're down to slice of life moeblob, Shinto mythology, magical girls, isekai and capeshit.
>>216048462>That's because they stopped plagiarizing Western artNah.
>>216048462>That's because they stopped plagiarizing Western artIt's less that and more the stuff they started "plagiarizing" from changing dramatically as the auteurs left. They stopped taking influence from classical Western literature/art, the bible, Western philosophy, and the great works of Western film from early trick films to French New Wave/New Hollywood to instead taking influence from either newer derivative lazy crap from the U.S like Tarantino and Michael Bay or navel-gazing, self-referential nonsense riffing on Miyazaki, Toriyama, or Mizuma, with devastating results. It's a part of how you go from Oshii, Anno, Kon, and Ghibli to the shitpile we have now.
>>216048764>They stopped taking influence from classical Western literature/art, the bible, Western philosophy, and the great works of Western filmNot entirely.
>>216048066finally some journey to the west media from China
>>216048486Interestingly enough this is probably the best thing to come out in the past 15 years.
>>216048876>Not entirelyYeah but the depth of understanding of these concepts changed wildly. CSM for example takes surface level influence from Christianity, yet the entire series has an understanding of its concepts as thin as a puddle compared to even a little OVA from the 80s like AE.
>>216047743interesting; Angel's Egg is his only movie I like... the rest feel like missed opportunities, especially if you consider all those animes that made a lot more with a lot less (Megazone, Megazone II, the Macross movie etc.)
>>216048966It's up there.>>216048989>Yeah but the depth of understanding of these concepts changed wildlyMaybe. >CSM >AEWould need more titles to compare.
>>216049112>Would need more titles to compareKerberos vs. AOT would be another, this time the subject being the politics of culture and nationalism using the rise, fall, and quirks of Nazi Germany as a template/inspiration. They're both shonen series with similar story structures but one has far more depth and creativity than the other.
>>216047332No one does.
>>216049214>No one does.Euros do from time to time.
>>216049234Yeah.
the scream she lets out after the egg is broken is the most blood-curdling scream I ever heard in a kino
German anime is the world's finest
>>216049398Full Metal Alchemist is about the German Empire (pre-Nazi one) too... some people recommend the older version for extra racism and alchemy, but the newer one just looks incomparably better
>>216048486The stepmom has MASSIVE tits
>>216047412he spent like, 20 years of his life with Tatsunoko. I think he actually had enough of animation for a lifetime and just wants to chill out with illustrations. i agree that he's not really appreciated in the mediums he's involved with though, like gamers will always see him as "the guy who does the weird wispy final fantasy art that isn't nomura"
