The Duffer brothers spent like five years writing the screenplay for S1. I think their lack of preparedness shows through in areas like how S2 is pretty much a beat for beat retread of S1 but with worse characterization. The memberberry stuff is definitely Netflix though, they pushed hard for S3 and beyond to be more comedic and blockbustery.
