because the writers have zero experience in warfighting or any relevant background in military doctrine and just think military leaders can control all their units like they are playing a really elaborate videogame. They wrote this scene in such a way that, in their minds, this was some epic woman leadership moment where the heckin men need to just get out of the way but in reality it demonstrated the opposite.

he was literally an acting general, responsible for the lives of everyone beneath him in the fleet. You can't ghost your top brass for some super secret plan known only to you and expect people to just accept that.
