I picked up on that too, both actors seem to have zero chemistry which is odd considering how the series started, some of their scenes are clearly intended to be big character defining moments but just don't land. The guy playing Hopper is clearly phoning it in.
A lot of the character dynamics feel off this season so far, very shallow performances all round. The actors playing Steve and Mike are also not putting much effort into line delivery.

Will killing the demogorgons was a great scene and exactly what I want out of the show. This season has been better, in my opinion, because there isn't constant relationship filler between Nancy and Jonathan or Mike and eleven or Joyce and Hopper, etc. It got straight into the action and has been pretty relentless so far. I've enjoyed it much more than the last season. I got so sick of everything revolving around eleven.

I think Season 3 has enough good stuff to enjoy, but there's a few points where the Duffers clearly lost the handle on a couple of aspects of the show and it became more cartoony, they've somewhat regained it since. Namely, Lucas's sister was kind of funny being his bratty kid sister in Season 2 in a brief role, so they greatly beefed up her role and made "being bratty" her whole character, only she wasn't a little kid anymore, she now was a teenager, and it wasn't just directed at Lucas, her big brother anymore, it was directed at everyone, so what you got was just a mouthy bitch who is horrible to everyone for no reason. Her NOTICEABLY smaller role in S4 sure seemed like them correcting their error.
