This show has potential but they keep doing dumb stuff that ruins the tension and immersion. There's like five scenes where a character has to obliquely explain something by making overt references to a period movie or book. I feel like this show doesn't trust the audience to make any inferences or be paying attention and has to spell things out constantly and explicitly, like if they mention a previous event they have to cut to a flashback scene of that event happening. Somehow a glass bottle is effective against Demogorgons but a firing squad isn't? They can tank mounted turrets just fine with zero injuries but a shotgun with a tracker was able to embed itself deep in the skin? Of course there's the grenade scene which was just so goofy, I don't know why they had to show the guys flying back that's like actual slapstick shit. And the long-winded explanation scene with Max was just completely boring and inconsequential. I actually do like this show but I have a lot of criticisms of this season so far.

One thing the show has been consistently good at is introducing a character who seems to be a very basic genre douche and having them turn out to have more layers to them, and more likable for it. Not to say there aren't still stock characters who just serve a simple purpose, but still, all the way back to Steve in S1, and right now to Derek in S5, it's one thing they definitely can do fairly well.
