the duffer brothers were too young to actually know what the 80s were really like so their show has always borrowed the aesthetics without understanding the meaning behind the aesthetics. For example in the very first episode Mike has a poster of The Thing in his room when in the 80s the movie was a flop and nobody gave a fuck about it until years later. The duffer brothers wouldn't know that and are only imitating the 80s on a surface level.
