As much as I dislike Tarantino, he’s not entirely wrong. Dano didn’t bring the oomph, vigor, or charisma the role required. It’s hard to believe his character could build a devoted congregation when he consistently comes across as a fag. The story needed him to have at least some charisma or energy—not enough to overshadow Plainview, but enough to pose a credible threat.
