But in such dry conditions, when we'd evade one of them, they would fall down on top of these keys and they would catch range bans. So, soon the whole board was dotted with these lone columns of personal bans. And the whole view smelled of hot pockets.

The bear demon is lame and is cruel to the actual natives who were in the region. They tried to help but couldn't care for 100 half dead men going mad. They tried to steer them to freshwater and helped them with seal hunting and igloo building but there was huge communication gaps and the men were reported by the Inuit to be so unhealthy they were losing their facilities. The inuit were afraid they were possessed by Tupilati demons and couldn't be dissuaded from heading down the western side of King Williams into a barren region where they would all starve. The trinkets of the expedition that survive today were said to be from the inuit staying with the dying men and handling their burials. The family accounts were dismissed because the admiralty didn't want to admit that the inuits saw cannibalism. The bear demon should have just been a demon driving them mad.

Though it would be really depressing end if it followed the intuit accounts the just follow a lady called Seepa and her family away from west King Williams but were throwing up the food giving and kept collapsing and the family eventually realized they couldn't save them. Another family comes across likely the same group collapsed in the snow and stays with them giving them warm food till they all pass away

Also summoning something like the bear demon would require child sacrifice from an evil shaman and to use their bones to make an Idol. The inuit would have thought someone very evil targeted the men and been scared shitless.

>>216472157At least they had clean water at the time + ice to boil, in old age water was a central concern:"The water taken aboard in casks is never preserved in the state of purity it has on land.Depending on the nature of the wood, the cleanliness of the cask, the age of the container, the length of the voyage, and the motion of the ship, it undergoes a series of successive alterations. At first, it takes on a yellowish or reddish color, a wine-like taste, and a musty smell; sailors say the water is ‘sick.’Later, in many vessels, after several weeks, the water becomes cloudy and a mucilaginous deposit forms at the bottom of the cask. This deposit sometimes rises in filaments suspended in the liquid. In poorly kept ships, one even finds small worms, born from the fermentation of the organic matter left in the staves.Often, this water—after having been bad for a long time—clarifies by itself: the deposit settles, the smell disappears, the taste becomes more tolerable again. This is a phenomenon well known to old sailors; they say the water ‘comes back.’But, if the cask is old or porous, or if the ship’s rolling constantly stirs the deposits, the water becomes corrupted again; it turns flat, then empyreumatic, and sometimes outright putrid. On long voyages, the water thus passes through several successive “illnesses,” separated by intervals during which it seems better, without ever truly being wholesome. Finally, when the water has taken on the smell of the bilge, or when it absorbs the emanations from the bottom of the ship, it becomes entirely unfit for drinking. At that point, lacking any other resource, crews have relied on sour wine, weak beer, rice-water, or distilled water produced on board."

>>216477847No. You became a midshipman for that reason (but more often because you were an extra son that your parents didn’t know what to do with). You became a sailor because you were running from a crime or pregnancy, or you would starve or because you woke up on a ship with a headache.
>>216478420>There's an entire massive community of people who actually think life as a peasant post black death was better and more satisfying than life today. I've seen people posting threads about that shit on this very board in the last 12 months.Nta but what does this have to do with thinking people want to on a 19th century sailing vessel? Those are two completely different lifestyles. Sailing is romanticized because of the ships, not the sailors.

In the same way that there are people who think life as a peasant is easier and more tolerable than life in the modern era in America working in a low intensity blue collar or white collar job. They're not simply interested in the the time period and setting in an abstract way, they actually think they'd like to be there living that lifestyle because they're completely naive to the realities of what that would entail.
