Animation has so much artistic potential as a medium, probably more than any other medium out there. How come outside of a few Japanese auteurs and some Europeans in the 70s, and maybe Fantasia, is it so rarely utilized in such a way? Also what are some of your guys favorite animated films or series or ones you guys think are really under appreciated?
>>216472341I watched The Time Masters recently, it was really nice.
there's tons of arthouse animation out there, you're just a pleb
>>216472546yeah, mostly shorts though.
I like Girls Last Tour
>>216472341No it doesn't. You're thinking of animation in general whereas "anime" is pretty much boxed into a very specific style that gets very old
>>216472779?
>>216472501i remember your post. glad you enjoyed it, anon.>>216472546also this. the Soviet Union is known for its animation. OP is just a weeaboo who thinks animated kino is either: Disney, anime, or other.
>>216472829>doesn't understand simple conceptWhat a shock
>>216472341Arthouse doesnt make mone and animation costs a lot of mone
>>216472341Beautiful movie, but barely makes sense anyway
>>216472846I thought saying European animation in the 70s pretty well covered soviet animation too, I guess the timeline there is quite a bit more broad though. Idk, most of my knowledge of soviet animation comes from various shorts I've seen on youtube and the internet archive from the 70s and 80s. Some really cool shit but to my knowledge not a lot of feature films. (I'm aware that I could just be ignorant on the subject)
>>216473052as a Britfag i don't think we've produced much animation that can be considered 'arthouse' (and Ireland mogs, picrel) but Britain has made some cool stuff.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Me1yVplOPrA>Halas and Batcheloryou're most likely to know these from the Animal Farm film. but they've done plenty of interesting shorts, from wartime cartoons to a feature-length adaptation of Ruddigore (an opera).
>>216472924True. But even as far as accessible stuff is concerned, I think there's plenty more room for imagination and creativity than the vast majority of what we get in a way that wouldn't compromise general appeal too much. I wish we had more people like Ralph Bakshi making movies. Even with someone like Miyazaki, as assessable and mainstream as his movies are, at least he gets a little more imaginative and creative than most.
>>216473189I also love Cartoon Saloon.
>>216473189>>216473251these old-school animators were on the right stuff. cool short
Now that I think of it I actually think stuff like Ren and Stimpy, and in a different, perhaps slightly lesser degree, stuff like early Adventure Time and Over the Garden Wall are pretty good examples of modern American animation that both retains a genuinely artistic and imaginative sensibility without losing its more wide appeal. Idk, just a thought.
it's absolutely tiresome to make. you need to bring a bunch of elite animators together to make one decent animated movie.
>>216472341Go back to /a/
>>216473733no
>>216472341For a Satoshi Kon or Mamoru Oshii to exist, the person needs to be a fan of animation, care about art as a serious form of expression, and be motivated, talented and intelligent enough to create work of value. Those Venn diagrams simply don't overlap enough to produce more than a handful of people.
>>216472341There are quite a few every year. But it's not a popular genre for adult audiences. Check out the Annecy festival awards if you want to discover new stuff.I recommend Anomalisa, Belladonna, Mind game, Mad God, The Girl Without Hands, anything by Satoshi Kon, Funan, Flee
>>216472982Based. Watched this multiple times when I was a kid. So good.
>>216472846>the Soviet Union is known for its animationI don't think it'd make the average persons top 50 guesses for "what do you know about the USSR?"
>>216472901I still don't get it. OP is talking about animation as a medium in general and then you reply > No it doesn't. You're thinking of animation in generalit doesn't make sense to me.
>>216473855I wasn't sure how to feel about Anomalisa when I watched it but it was definitely unique, (it has been ten years) Mad God was cool though, and I love Satoshi Kon. Ill check out the rest. Thanks.
>>216473781Go back tranny
>>216474007I'm really just naming some of the ones I like off the top of my head though. You might want to check some trailers because some of those are kinda out there.I loved Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman which is pretty obscure, in case you like Murakami adaptations. And the classics like The Plague Dogs and Fantastic Planet are worth a watch but not easy to get into
>>216473891To be fair, most westoids don't know shit about Russia.
>>216472341One of the most recent you’re describing came out a few years ago. Also, sorry to be the bearer of bad news here, but the time of Art house anime has passed. It came during a time when the formula wasn’t really established and so you also had things like Akira. But then Shonen anime proved to make the big bucks and you don’t really see those anymore
>>216473969Anime refers to a specific type of animation from a specific region, is it really that hard to understand? Sorry, I'm not autistic so I genuinely am asking
>>216475104>specific type of animation Except this isn’t the case…
>>216474857This was an amazing work of craft dedicated to creating a truly repulsive infernal machine. Something to behold is all as best as I can put it
>>216475190Did you not read OPs post after the first few words?
>>216474857The pinnacle of style over substance and that's not a complaint or even necessarily a critique. I'm all for it, this shit rocks.
The very notion that animated films "cannot be art" revokes the notion that, somehow, live action films have a monopoly on--their innate--"artfulness".
>>216472546Most of them are shitty, which is why they're forgotten. There are a few that are worthwhile, but it's hard standing out when everything is a bad stereotype of pretentious student films.
>>216472341Same reason reviewers said 2d games sucked after 3d slop became the new thing?
>>216475381The picture in OP(Angel’s Egg) is considered one of the highlights of arthouse anime films. I DON’T CARE what YOUR definition is. That’s how it has been
>>216472341I don't know any that are under appreciated but everyone mentions Akira so I will say Wicked City is cooler.
>>216475537oh how about Robot Carnival?https://youtu.be/id1eRjO4p_0?si=HTxDYHn2v7zc5wdb
>>216472341https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JigbZ-9-Yg
>>216475525>animeThanks for that
>>216474857Mad god was terrible and a prime example of why you need a proper writer/editor because if you let the effects guy do everything you end up with a painfully dull movie. If it was 15 mins long it would have been great.
>>216475537Akira and Wicked City are action/horror schlock.
>>216472341FYI, Gandahar is currently free on The Roku Channel. Second half drags a bit but the first half is super lush.
>>216477025>muh genreWhat genre is art house little retard
