Horror movies usually start off strong but then tank their own stories in the end with terrible writing. “If we just have this one artifact and hold hands while chanting, the evil inter-dimensional clown spider demon will be trapped.” Dumb.Weapons remains mostly non-retarded throughout. Even though it pivots from psychological to supernatural, it’s well done and really refreshing. It avoids too many jump scares, and leans more heavily into creepiness and odd atmospheres. The mystery remains strong through the first act, being revealed slowly in the second and exposed in the third. 17 young children from the same class all walk out of their houses at the same time and disappear into the night. Only one student is unaffected. Act 1 follows the teacher of that class. She’s harassed by the town, having an affair with a married cop, and having trouble at work with her principal. Act 2 is a portmanteau style, following the cop, a local junkie, the lone kids aunt Gladys, a local contractor who’s son disappeared, and the principal. Act 3 follows the kid, with the timeline sort of shifting to before everyone goes missing.

>>216486895I thought it was alright, a decent movie. But the structure being told from different character's perspective is annoying. It feels like you reach the climax an hour in then you need to faf about with another 3 character's perspective to actually get the payoff. Also feels like most of the cast is pointless, the kid is the main victim and also the one who solves everything, you could delete the other 4 character's and the story would largely remain unchanged.
This flick was surprisingly devoid of any anti-White propaganda or SJW jibes. Approved
