Why did critics portray this scene so dishonestly in their reviews?
Professional critics have always looked down on capeshit, and Eternals came out at the height of Martin Scorsese’s “capeshit isn’t cinema” discourse, which got many critics even more riled up. Add to that the fact Eternals was a genuine attempt at arthouse cinema that bucked under the pressure of the genre’s blockbuster trappings, and the blowback was inevitable. They just zeroed in on this scene because it allowed them to shit on the movie from a perceived moral high ground that it was making light of the tragedy of Hiroshima (nevermind the fact one of the X-Men movies literally had Wolverine in Nagasaki when the bomb dropped).Same reason they problematized the “adult stuck in a child’s body” character which is one of the oldest sci-fi tropes.
