They were unironically right. The space race was a massive waste of taxpayer money

>>216492227The space race is the only thing that matters. If we do not colonise the stars then the sum total of humanity, no matter how long it goes on for, will be a pitiful history or monkeys stacking rocks on top of each other until we died out.The freedom promised by the Age of Spacefaring was the logical continuation of Europeans charting the planet during the Age of Sail; its failure to materialize doomed humanity to meaningless, futile thrashing against the edges of Earth’s gravity well until the sun burns out.I would happily see a billion people fed to mass graves if it meant the first man proudly putting the first flag up on Mars in my lifetime.
>>216492227It served its goal of being de facto R&D into ICBM technologies
History hasn't treated the abrupt end of the American booster and capsule program kindly. 200+ billion spent on a flawed 1st generation RLV and a NASA that sought endless funding, superboosters and nuclear space stations instead of conservative evolutions of existing launch vehicles and capsules has left NASA a dried out husk
>>216492227This is why I don't believe any interstellar society will have black people in it.
we can't do anything cool because some poorfag can't just get a job
>kills 14 people in your path
>>216492642I wouldn't go THAT far, but the people who claim that going into space is a waste of time and money infuriate me. They're always so smug about it too, because yeah, let's just sit on Earth and wait out the next big thing to try and kill us until one actually sticks. The tech we get from researching space travel often has civilian applications too, especially medical equipment. The Luddites who get uppity about the "waste of money" have no fucking idea, and are often totally cool with huge military spending or unwinnable wars on drugs too.
>>216492642calm down elon you're right tho
>>216492227It further crippled russia and proved that communism not only had trouble feeding its own citizens, but ultimately couldnt handle not falling apart under the strain of any major endeavour like that.It does feel that the actual knowledge we gained from it was underutilized though. We've lost so much of it, and arent really any closer to getting any material gains from space.
