What's the difference between movies, cinema and kino?
Movies are the standard unit. Functional, straightforward, built to be watched without requiring any particular mindset. They proceed, they end, nobody argues about them afterward.Flicks have a looser structure. Not messy, just casual. The kind of thing where the creative choices feel more like “sure, that works” than “this must mean something.” A flick doesn’t aim high; it aims comfortably.Cinema is where intent becomes visible. You can always tell when something is cinema because the shots linger, the pacing slows, and there’s at least one moment where it’s obvious the director wanted it framed exactly that way. Whether it’s good or not is irrelevant — the ambition is what categorizes it.Aside on flicks:Flicks maintain the optimal balance: enough effort to exist, not enough to posture.
Movies are standard films. Cinema is artsy. Kino is good.
