I am moderately socially anxious and you nailed the dilemma perfectly. Weddings are alright though because there are so many people playing the same ''role'' so to speak so you can blend into any group and be easily accepted. I had to give a short (1 minute) speech before final vows at a friend's wedding and that was much harder than anything related to the actual party (got through it with Toastmasters thanks to an anon recommending it on /ck/)
