Sopranos is primarily a character drama. And the characters are appealing, because they feel real, or real enough.

The whole thing is presented very unpatronisingly. You never get the sense the show is wagging it's finger at you for liking Tony, for example. Because Tony is a likable character. He's just a product of his circumstances, and you can't exactly blame him for being all of the things he is.
