Been at my current job for over a year and I have never been inside the break room. I clock in, put my jacket in the changing room then do my shift, clock out and leave. There are people who I see every week who don't know my name nor I theirs. I try to smile at people but it's sort of silly in a way because I can't seem to bring myself to go any further than that. Like I won't go out of my way to get to know anyone or ask about their lives. So I wonder to myself what is even the point of smiling at these people or saying good morning or holding a door open when they must think I'm insane? While in my own brain I feel I am trying my best, from the perspective of the norms they must think I'm insane. Like a normal person wouldn't ever consider working for a whole year at a place and saying good morning to people but nothing more than that. They must wonder why I sometimes say good morning then other times I can't even meet their eyes or hold eye contact. Depending on the workplace though, the people can be respectful and indifferent if you prefer to keep to your own as long as you do your job and don't have any issues. I think these days workplaces are probably more welcoming and accepting of people and their quirks and differences compared to in the past. But if it's the kind of environment with a tightly knit social circle with the specific kind of neurotic normies who take it as an offense if you don't socialize with the same frequency and intensity they want, then you run into problems. But you don't wanna work in a place like that anyways.
