When streaming casts exist?
>>
For me? It's the Nvidia Shield TV Pro!
>>
to be a buggy slow piece of shit
>>
What's a streaming cast?
>>
So companies can have complete and utter control over what you do
>>
>>216509802
literal spyware. LGs take screenshots every few minutes and send them somewhere. I was going through the apps on mine, alexa, amazon prime, microsoft copilot (which I didn't install but showed up after a system update), none of those programs can be uninstalled. I should just get off my ass and hook up a mini-PC and use that instead.
>>
It's a better way to watch content. Its already on the TV and i easily watch my streaming services.
>>
so you don't need to streaming cast i presume. i don't even know what that means and probably 95% of people don't either.
>>
>>216509802
>What's the point of a smart TV?
Well, it's slow, convoluted and you get buried in a labyrinth of menus. Who doesn't want that?
>>
this is the one place where I dont mind targeted advertising because I knew thats the price of free /tv/.
>>
>>216509802
Use case for a streaming cast on a smart tv?
>>
I don't mind it in hotels, its convenient. At home I have a laptop permanently plugged in to my tv. I'm posting on my living room tv right now.
>>
>>216509802
It doesn't matter; it's not like they make non-smart TVs these days. Even DVD players have that crap built into them now.
>>
>>216509983
>>216510089
Streaming cast = shit like chromecast
I heard smart TVs spy on you more than google does. I had no idea that it did that.
>>
>>216510697
Oh, ok. I have a smart tv (Hisense). I don't trust this thing enough to connect it to Wi-fi and login to everything and just start surfing, but I will say that this tv plays media files like it's nobody's business.

I exclusively use it to playback my 4k hdr/DV shit with surround sound and it throws everything I throw at it and rarely bitches about compatibility issues.
>>
>>216510697
Mine just pushed out an update asking me if I'd like to send viewing data to Roku when I selected my fucking DVD player hdmi input, before it let me play anything. I clicked "no" but ofc wtf does that even mean? "Ok, we're not going to send this data we're already collecting just because you clicked 'no.'" They'll just make it mandatory when next they update their EUA. Shit's so fucked.
>>
>>216510697
well that requires buying additional thing or things. most probably don't care doing that if their tv already has things build in.
it does make some sense for if you've summer cabin or something with old tv and want to make it more "smart" without having to buy new tv
>>
>>216510784
Hmmm, I'm thinking about buying a smart tv for my boomer mom, who's too stupid to use external things like an USB. But I heard that they get outdated fast, and that app support already drops after a year or two. So that means you have to buy a new TV every 2 to 3 years.
Shit like a chromecast sounds more interesting to me, but it seems that both have its spyware issues. Im leaning towards a chromecast right now.
>>
>>216510804
As I pointed out in my previous comment, apparently app support drops fast, like after 2 to 3 years your smart tv is too outdated for Netflix and stuff. Which is weird because youtube still works.
>>
>>216510841
Why not a Roku? I have one of those too and it is extremely convenient and nice to use. Of course, I use the most expensive model. She would probably like that.

The voice remote is pretty good and controller is small with few buttons. Just set her up with it and installing that programs and logging into accounts with them and she should be good to go for years.
>>
>>216510861
A lot of TVs come with AndroidTV or Roku now. It's just worst korea pushing garbage like Tizen
>>
>>216510861
maybe depends on brand and model. i got some lower end philips 4k smart tv whatever for my mom that was 5 years old and apps and stuff seemed work from what i could tell when i was testing it before hand.
>>
>>216510841
All modern TVs outside of the Amazon Fire sets for $100 are going to be smart TVs and 4k. It's not a big deal. The past issues with apps no longer working was a 8-10 year old dog shit budget brand issue from back in the days of a dozen operating systems. Now there are like maybe 3 and it's not like Google TV is going under anytime soon.
Even of the streaming BS did shit the bed for some reason you could just add a streaming box at that point. So who cares? Keep in mind modern sets are all disposable tech now. You get maybe 5 years max and by then the tech will be way better or the set will odds are start to have issues. These aren't CRTs with its end life tech cycle sort of deal. Where grandmother's 1994 set is still limping along

> pluto TV stopped working on my Samsung TV from 2022

Should I just connect a roku stick to it? The OS is so fucking slow sometimes too.
>>
>>216509802
>smart
>/tv/
pick one
>>
>>216512156
My advice is yeah.

But also, make sure you tried optimizing your tv. Try disabling enhancements and shit like that might be using up your tv's system resources.
>>
>>216512241
Knows more then I do it got AI
>>
>>216509802
You can't watch anything without a TV so your question is fucking stupid as fuck.
>>
>>216509802
so they can serve you extra ads of course
>>
>>216509802

The TV with its larger screen is like the modern hearth of the home. Its a place where people watch things together and cuddle on the couch. Laptops , tablets and phones are for solitary viewing. If you live alone I guess you dont need a tv.
>>
>>216512373
Buy a monitor you doss cunt.
>>
>>216510861
I bought a cheap 55 inch LG for like 500 bucks in 2017. Everything still works and updates

I just became a budget TCL (Costco version with 5 year total warranty) Chad. 65 inch Qm6k for 500 for black Friday. Definitely Worth it and beautiful
>>
I like that I can just install Kodi straight on my TV from the app store. I use ProjectIvy as a launcher so I don't have a problem with ads.

I have a dumb TV and a PS4 I use for streaming. I like my life.
>>
>>216509802
yeah idk why they're still pushing them when everyone either has a Roku, Apple TV, Nvidia Shield, a laptop/mini-pc hooked up, and pretty soon the Steam Cube
>>
>>216510861
My circa 2016 Roku runs everything except Netflix which I cancelled like 3 years ago because the app got too bloated and kept crashing the tv. Nothing of value was lost
>>
>>216509983
Android boxes
>>
>>216512973
It's better too because when I set the "don't show ads on home screen" it actually kept it because the modern ones are too bloated to load lmao
>>
I just don't connect them to the internet.
>>
>>216512951
Based ps4 chad. Same. The only downside I found is that you can’t download VPNs and watch movies and shows blocked in the US
>>
>>216509802
Yeah idk, i just know that with the Amazon Firestick, you can stream videos from your computer to the Firestick through the VLC app
But i think if you have a smart TV, then you can also just plug in an external hard drive with the videos you want to watch on it and watch it that way too, so either way, you don't need to really pay for streaming services
>>
>>216513182
That's why in addition to my PS4, I have a Macbook and a HDMI-to-USB-C cord.
>>
>>216512252
I've played around with the settings but I'll try again. It's usually just the free TV apps or when it first starts when it's slow. But honestly it's kind of a headache. I have an old hand me down TV with a roku stick that performs exponentially faster than my main TV in the living room.
