>>216511824Directors often like reusing actors they are familiar with I guess, it might make it easier to work
>>216511652This film was a really mixed bag. The third act of this film is genuinely great, probably one of the best out of Scorsese's films, but the other 2/3rds is just filled with stuff like this.
I think this guy got scammed by his glazier, that shit shatters into a thousand pieces just by softly closing the door.
>>216511877NoFucking goombahs from one specific generation do this
This is Scorsese's equivalent of the flower shop scene in The Room.
Scorsese is overrated as fuck. No one cares about the American mob anymore. They haven't for decades. It's not interesting. It's a bunch of obese Italians in suits killing other obese Italians in suits.
>>216511652This is Scorcese's Avatar.
>>216511652I put this shot up there with the Alien shot of Ash's head on the table. It's better to cut and hide parts of a shot that failed rather than keep it as is just because it's continuous or wide angle or whatever the fuck look you were going for. It breaks suspension of disbelief on so many levels. The glass breaking on the door is shit, but it's the least offensive part of this whole scene. One, the girl on the left is a horrible actor. She's completely unfazed by the entire ordeal except for a single close up shot that breaks continuity with the before/after wide angle shot where she's in la la land. The most offensive part being the attack. You could easily cut between some close ups of Robert's angry face from the victims perspective, and a shot of a leg/boot crushing down on the guys hands (which doesn't have to be Roberts). A viewer will accept what is implied to be happening provided there's nothing jarring that takes them out of the scene. When you concern yourself over some jerk-off wide shot or continuous shot instead of story telling, you're failing as a director. Scorsese knows this shit, but he's just a lazy fuck now.
>>216512245Very good post
>>216512245unc thinks he's a film director :skull:
>>216511930The Irishman is easily one of Scorcese's most mature, introspective and well-researched films. The story and dialogue and characters are so real and the whole story just feels so connected and wonderfully written. The directing is very good, and the de-aging effects you more or less forget about half an hour in. This film could never have been made, and some argue it shouldn't have. But Scorcese did, and made a beautiful fucking piece of cinema, albeit yes, flawed. It was different from his previous mob films. You could argue it was a creative choice to use all these tough guys like Joe Pesci, De Niro and Pacino that audiences know are raging, psychopathic mobsters in Scorcese films, and turning them into flawed, sympathetic characters who don't act fantastical or egotistic. It's a very small film, about a lot of detail and feels very, very intimate. It's by no means perfect, but I love the film and I admire Scorcese and everyone making it, even if it did feel like the actors were skeletons being dragged onto set.>>216512245Wonderful post.
Netflix has never produced a single a good movie. Not one single one.

>>216512422Actually I'm an editor, but I've directed several personal projects. Editing and directing go hand in hand. In fact, I'm of the belief you should never direct anything until you've cut together a variety of different projects. Or at least heavily familiarized yourself with its concepts. I can't tell you how many times I'd be editing a project wishing I had just a few more seconds of a particular shot, or wish they would have shot some inserts that were borderline essential. You really don't know what you're going to need sometimes until you've been in the position of needing it before.

Why not cast another actor for the young Irishman? Why is it a sin to have different actors playing opposite ends of a characters life all of a sudden? De Niro did it himself with Vito Corleone

>>216512245I don't remember Ash's decapitated head from the Alien movie because I watch Aliens a lot more. It's fine to have some movies with a lot of cuts and some movies having longer shots. The opening of Vampires was pretty cool with the guys taking down the vampires and that was a lot of frenetic cuts but the Akira Kurosawa film with the Emperor and his body double in the beginning where you see full body shot and a long continuous take as they talk was also fine. Just because I ask AI for more information about how old movies shot their films doesn't necessarily mean that I want every film to have longer shots or have more ones. I also enjoy the Transformers film from Bay and those are faster paced and frenetic and not like old Hollywood films. With that being said, I do wish more films these days stop relying on green/blue screen and outsourcing the computer imagery/effects to pajeet studios in India. Would like them to shoot more on location and use Japanese and American studios to do the CGI. And the directors can go ahead and use quick, shorter cuts or go old Hollywood and use longer cuts while pulling the camera back a bit to see more of the characters. Whichever style suits them.
>>216513752*more "oners"
There’s another bit where Deniro has to clamber over some rocks to throw his gun in the river, and he climbs the rocks very gingerly, like he’s afraid he’ll slip and break his hip (which he is afraid of IRL), then he does this really pathetic underarm throw into the water, like a girl. Like, imagine Mr Burns throwing a gun. That’s what it looks like.
