Why is it so difficult for actors to sell movies these days?

Sydney Sweeney is one of the most popular actresses around, but her recent film bombed HARD at the box office.

Even Leonardo DiCaprio couldn't make One Battle After Another a big hit, even with all the raving reviews.

Feels like the movie theatre's demise is inevitable.

I LOVE SYDNEY SWEENEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Artsy movies always tank, retard. Box office is not a parameter of success for real cinema.

Hollywood lost goodwill and trust with the audience. We know the writers are dishonest activist hacks who hate regular people's guts. The actors are too stupid to realize they're being used for propaganda. Nobody wants to watch uglified Sydney Sweeney pretend to be a boxer written by a xe/xir feminist faggot. If she starred in a cool sexy crime thriller and wore revealing clothes the movie would be a blockbuster, but you'd actually need writers with brains and testosterone to write that kind of story.

Reminder: nobody on the right is melting down over Sydney Sweeney. The only people obsessively spamming Wojaks and writing political fanfiction about a jeans pun are terminally-online Discord activists who need to pretend a neutral PR line was a culture-war victory. Sydney didn’t ‘go conservative,’ didn’t ‘betray’ anyone, and didn’t say anything political. The meltdown is 100 percent projection from a crowd furious that a blonde didn’t perform the guilt ritual on command.

If you make a light romcom with attractive white people like Anyone But You, people will go see it. People are not lining up for a lesbian boxer movie or slopaganda like OBAA. You have to make stuff people actually want to see.

In the past, anon, in the wayback of ‘memberin’, studios would create whole films to display those tits in as many creative and entertaining means as possible. People (men) would buy tickets to see those tit features, usually with some gun fights and explosions between tit-shots. Clever script writers would sometimes craft good stories hidden beneath these raucous scenes.
>>

The days of the superstar actor that puts butts into seats are over. People would go see a Schwarzenegger movie, almost didn't matter what it was about. There's nobody like that anymore. Well, Tom Cruise maybe. But he's the last of that breed. And it's never coming back.
>>
>>216512957
In the past there was no internet porn, tiktok, instagram etc.
Tits aren't enough to sell movies now - there are to many alternative ways to show them off without wasting million dollar budgets to create a piece "art".
Access to information kinda leveled the playing field - people realized movies aren't that great in comparison as the industry was telling them that they were.
It's like in the past - due to not knowing any better - most people thought politicians were smart, patriotic statesmen and not corrupt, often close-to-retarded pedophiles.
>>
quality of movies and novelty of ideas aside, people largely cannot be bothered to go out and do things. entertainment at home is "good enough" and anything you want to see will likely make it's way to you streaming service or rip sites sooner rather than later.
theater prices are also outlandish for the average person who's barely motivated to go in the first place. Lately, the only things that draw crowds are social media-driven "in crowd" phenomenon like barbie/oppenheimer or cinematic-universe franchise slop. Standalone films doing exceptionally well or generating a lot of attention are very much the exception
>>
Streaming and internet content are far more popular now. Put Sydney Sweeney on onlyfans or twitch and she will break records for profits on thosd platforms. Marvel ruined the movie going experience for multiple generations. Nobody will get that hype for a movie in our lifetime again. The hangover of Engame 1 and 2 caused people to not give a shit since nothing compares to the 15 years of buildup for that series.

It's this, except the actors willingly volunteer and whore themselves for the same propaganda they believe in. That's the part about them being stupid. They're dumb enough to believe something said enough times, like all the propaganda topics looking to make every excuse possible to avoid the real reason from your post. Hollywood is dead, American Media is dead, and soon Amazon will go down.

None of the claims hold up.
She didn’t go conservative, she didn’t issue an apology, she didn’t bend the knee, and the “dogwhistle” was a pun written by a denim marketing intern.
This entire controversy exists only because terminally online partisans needed a narrative arc and couldn’t get one from her actual actions.
>>
>>216512313
Because the only people who care about Sydney Sweeney are incel chuds, and incel chuds don’t go to movies or buy it, they just steal the torrent.

This is why Hollywood will always be liberal and produce liberal movies, and conservatives die out. liberals pay for culture. The right doesn’t. There’s no capitalist economic incentive to create right wing culture. Just watch as Sweeney tries to pivot her image from the right in the near future.

(Also the right can’t create anything as subtle and refined as art. Theyre just shit out low iq propaganda and eat that goyslop up)

Fringe subjects. Disingenuous or self-important treatment. Grooming audiences what to think/believe, not just asking questions from many angles of a subject. Or the A-vs-B dynamics feel are hyperbole vs hyperbole (already done in the news or online memes; why pay to see more of the same?), not giving a sense of well-constructive dramatic conflict that encapsulates the important points of contention. IOW, agitprop is EVERYWHERE, why pay more to be exposed to it, or have your bias confirmed? (Ofc Top Gun, patriotism movies are also confirmation bias, but antiwar movement in US is long dead if ppl like the excuses for war enough.)

I disagree with this. If the movie was actually good it would have gained popularity through word of mouth. But you are right about Sweeney. She's a miscast in just about everything that doesn't show off her chest.
>>
>>216514869
>She didn’t go conservative
She didn't know the MAGA hats her family was wearing at the literal MAGA themed birthday party meant right wing? She didn't know Florida was a red state and that she could pay the least amount of taxes by "living" there? She didn't understand that "I have such good jeans" could actually be a twist of tongue for "good genes"? God, Sydney must be so stupid, God knows how she got where she is today if she can't even figure this shit out by herself.
>>
>>216512313
It's directors nowadays who sell movies
Even Tom Cruise's latest Mission Impossible flicks haven't really done all that well, and he is pretty much the last movie star

Lots of people do. Cinderella Man was great. Ali was great. Warrior was great. Rocky while fiction was a story about a weakling training and rising to the top of boxing. People love these stories if they enjoy the actors performance. Once again, Sweeney can't act and no one likes her.

Most movies are about subjects that nobody gives a fuck about, like female boxers. When I still visited the cinema I would never have gone to see a movie about a female boxer, who gives a shit? Most people don't even care about male boxers in 2025.
Hollywood has a serious creativity problem and doesn't seem to want to make movies that the majority of people want to watch.
>>
>>216515516
So she loves her family regardless of politics, doesn't want to pay ridiculous state taxes, and doesn't care what hysterical retards on the internet will twist her words into in order to make themselves upset? Sounds pretty based if you ask me
>>
>>216512585
The problem Netflix has created is that they serve an endless conveyor belt of dogshit to their subscribers but people are too dumb/lazy to cancel it so they have no reason to make better products.
The industry as a whole fully embraced both the covid lockdowns and mass immigration into Western countries and both of those have resulted in the death of cinemas.
When covid hit I bought an LG 65" OLED and an Atmos receiver and speakers.
Wages have been decimated for young and lower working-class people combined with massive inflation meaning they are going to cut back on luxuries like cinema visits.

It's a case of you get what you fucking deserve for Hollywood.
>>
>>216512313
>Sydney Sweeney is one of the most popular actresses around
She's not.
She's popular on the internet becuase she has big boobs and gets naked and the drama around her 'is she/is she not' MAGA crap keeps her name active in social media.

Other than that she's a supporting character in popular HBO show that hasn't aired an episode in 3 years, and has a niche audience that doesn't seem to care that much about movies.

She was 'up and comming' after her romcom did well, but she's had a string of hits. She's mid tier at best.
Movie stars as a bankable idea have been dying for a decade, replaced with IP.

Isn't just about everybody poor? Aren't 2/3 of Americans incapable of procuring $1000? 1/3 of Americans have medical-related debt.
The idea of going to the movies, a $17 ticket and $10 popcorn, is quickly beginning to feel like the luxury theater experience is was intended to be a cheaper option of. Why would I spend time and money (I barely have) to see something that I know will end up on streaming services in a few months anyways?
That's a risk; it's safer to keep paying the whatever-dollars per month (I don't give them my money, so I don't know what ridiculous price it is now) and get god knows how many hours of mediocre content RATHER than gamble with a similar amount of money for one movie, one time, that may be shit.

People will still flock to go see certain things, but trips to the movies are clearly getting rarer. Even those tentpole films are getting more and more rare, soon those'll be gone if everybody keeps getting poorer -- which, obviously, they will, because there's no plan in place to help the overwhelming majority, only a select few who certainly never post on this shit hole. Maybe their interns do, though.

Maybe when everyone is poor enough, people will read more books. They're practically free and if you're even remotely tech-savvy (as in: you can Google something), they're most definitely free. Movies are going to feel the hurt, haven't theaters been dying for like 10 years? Expect things to get even worse, naturally.

> Why would I spend time and money (I barely have) to see something that I know will end up on streaming services
It’s not a poverty problem it’s a service problem.
The smallest TV they sell these days is 55”. In the day of DVD sales you has a shit 30” if you were a rich fuck and the quality of DVD is like 480p youtube streaming on most people’s crap TVs.
The “upgrade” of the big screen isn’t there. 3D died. Like you say it’s out on streaming soon anyway and everyone has a giant home theatre even the poors. So what ms the point?

I have realized that streaming sites will overtake traditional film production, especially as AI makes film production easier and cheaper for small teams.

The cool filmmakers won't care, and the reactionary film hubs will be rendered obsolete and laughed at. The other human capital has no loyalty and will migrate to work for the cooler production scenes.
>>
>>216512313
it's not. It's just that all the actors that sell movies are taken up (and so rich they don't need to work that hard), so producers are desperate to find the next big one.
>>
>>216512313
Everything will bomb now except capeshit and other well known IPs/sequels. People just wait to watch the other movies at home. It's over.
>>
>>216519176
>It’s not a poverty problem it’s a service problem.
It's definitely, at least partially, a poverty problem as well. I'm not actually "broke", but I'm not well off, so my money will not be going to a movie theater unless it's a "special occasion"; which at this rate basically only means a a girl I'm seeing wants to see something in theaters. So: very rare and won't be happening on my own, which it has in the past.

>So what ms the point?
Theaters without a doubt still offer the potential for the better movie experience. While the average Joe has a bigger TV now than ever before, the sound quality is likely to be shit. Your 70in Chinese TV has lousy speakers in it and people aren't going to rush out and buy a $1000 soundbar because, again, they're poor.
Really, their biggest draw is the fact that you're seeing it first -- as in before it's streaming -- so if it's something you're dying to see, you gotta go to the theater; and the social aspect. You and 3 friends catch a movie then eat dinner and talk about it. You and a girl you've been chatting with do the same thing as a second date.
It's something to do. Social spaces of all kinds are dying and being replaced with nothing. If they're not disappearing fully, they're becoming more expensive while nobody is paid more. More grim shit that saddens me to ponder.

>>216519349
Obviously bait, but I just want to make note that Trump and his squad of idiots have zero plan nor intention of helping Americans.
Ask a Republican what their stance on heatlhcare is and they'll say what Democrats are saying -- but they're useless too, of course, if they're only going to SAY the things and not take what's owed to the American people from private health insurance murderers.
