This movie has some of the best designed experimental scenes I've ever seen in a sci-fi. Props to the soundtrack too.
>>
Cosmic horror done correctly.
>>
Yeah too bad most anons got filtered by the black guy so they disregarded the whole movie. It has some flaws but there's a lot to like about it

Is it worth to re-watch?

You know that image of the anon with the bell they ring when they're triggered? I had that experience with this movie and a friend. He just bitched the whole time about how much he hated women.
>>
>>216513908
Boring.
>>
>>216514626
Yeah, it's major effete energy. You'd expect that bell image in particular would be used to mock the crybabies, not that they proudly post it themselves.
>>
>>216513908
What interesting idea did it even have?
>uhmm like the the cool alien design and stuff was like really original
>>
The scariest part about the shimmer is there's no malice at all in the alien threat. It seems like a being from a higher dimension that is attempting to communicate with beings from our dimension without any understanding of what things are beings, what if anything is analogous to it, and what is even comparable to communication for them.

So fucking terrifying and so compelling.
>>
>>216514899
this. this movie just leaves you with a pit in your stomach. definitely a movie that was still on my mind long after I watched it.
>>
>>216514791
Ambient genetic recombination is a cool body horror concept, and like >>216514899 says, a neutral but incomprehensible alien mind is much spookier than a violent invader.

Unfortunately the movie loses points for having the women explain everything on a 3rd-grade level. They're supposed to be expert scientists, they should be talking in jargon to put the viewer in the same "what the fuck is this?" mindset

>>
>>216513908
I feel the visual approach at times was a little to grab-bag like in that there was a focus on cool yet barely related visual set pieces rather than a more consistent but equally strange and disturbing visual approach. Like the initial dead body skeleton that was growing like a fungus was good, and the bear of course was great, but random crystal trees, flower branch deer and people turning into hedge sculptures didn't really make sense to me given the premise. I actually would have expected more of the general environment to be closer to the fungus skeleton; more moldy, soupy in structure, and just completely twisted beyond recognition. The fact that normal grass and plants were just still around, even when they were close to the crash, seemed out of place and lacked that sense of build up towards the climax of the film.

Amazing movie.
If there's any proof that garland is the right pick to do an elden ring adaptation - it's annihilation. Because it relies on storytelling via its use of repetition in themes and visual, rather than outright exposition - which is exactly how the souls/elden ring games do it.

I hate how it's one of those movies that have so many good ideas, props and scenes, but the "movie" parts (plot, characters, drama) is just bland as fuck.

I recently read the fourth book in this series called Absolution. Lowry being the main character for the second half was extremely based. I'm surprised Vandermeer had that in him.

Hated this movie though. Completely missed the point of the book. What compels a director to spoil the mystery and the fate of the main character in the first two opening scenes? And why did Garland add a bbc cuck plot that wasn't in the book?
>>
>>216521708
Also, I think the second book would be the best movie. The failed prodigal son of the Central dynasty being dropped into the Southern Reach with no idea whats going on, slowly uncovering the layers and realizing just how fucked up things are and then bugging out

>>
I think its kind of meh but the finale with the weird alien choreography and music was really cool. The idea of everything genetically mixing is a great setting and its executed well in a few places (the bear that mimics humans screaming for help, the moving intestines and subsequent incredible fungal explosion prop) and executed very lame in others (plants shaped like people, the crappy cgi plant deer). portman is delivering a very typical and uninteresting performance, jjl is interesting in just how her idea of 'dying of cancer' just means being really sleepy and mumbling the whole time, isaac is good. I do with garland stuck with his cool scifi stuff instead of becoming a war guy but im sure he'll do some more in the future

There's other elements of dumbing it down for the adaptation, too- in the book, nobody's names are given and they are referred to by role, with the POV character being The Biologist. She's also heavily detached from humanity and focused on nature, so her having an infidelity subplot and emotional breakdown at the initial loss of her husband was pretty funny to see. It's still a pretty good if heavily altered adaptation, there's just a bunch of dumb Hollywoodisms in there.

(The book triology is really fucking good.)

well no that's icing on the shit sandwich. the actual turd between the bread is the fact that the acting is bland, the story is not well executed, and the ideas for most of the last third of the movie before the lighthouse are just boring. if you're going to make a feminist cuck fantasy film at least make it good all the way through. "the people are...turning into hedges! there's trees made of crystal growing out of sand!" it's like they ran out of ideas after the bear. you're finish on a beach, there should be some kind of horrifying lowtide biological sludge all over the place. show that the end result of what's going on isn't just a big alligator or a bear that sounds like a human or even snaking intestines but absolute incomprehensible body horror. it's the least you can do because you're not going to fix that acting considering the actresses you have to work with

The reason she cured the anomaly was because the alien wasn't self aware and didn't know what it was an everybody before here didn't know what it was. second book is from the perspective of a guy who is the son of a famous mother and grandpa in the "Central" agency. He is put in charge of the facility and is tasked with figuring out what is really happening and it takes place just after the first book.
The third book takes place right before Area X "border" event happens and it's from the perspective of the Lighthouse keeper and involves one of the members from the expedition of the first movie but when she is a child.
Fourth book takes place around the same time as the "border" comes down but you get more context as to what the Central Agency knew about the area and the second half of the book shows you the very first expedition.
>>
It's like it's stuck between an ambiguous thoughtful Stalker/Solaris type thing and an analytical, concrete Michael Crichton science experiment and in the end it's just the worst of both worlds because the the explanations for everything aren't expanded upon enough to be interesting but it is explained just enough to rob the threatening world of its allure and mystery.

Only the ending the rest of the movie is really bad. The bear scene is really dumb.

Annihilation is very Stalker but there's also a bit of Stellaris in there.

I wish I could introduce my co worker to the entire internet. He’s a giga chad who gets laid seemingly on a daily basis and loudly talks about how much he hates women. He tells this to women too, who don’t care and still want to fuck him. Every time someone online says “only virgins hate women” I think about that guy. I also think about the many “m’lady” virgins I’ve known all my life who worship any woman who even looks their direction. And I realize most people are retarded
