why are british mystery shows so fucking miserable now? both this and slow horses i dropped after one episode, because it was just a straight fucking hour of people carping at each other. total poverty of the spirit
>>
Dunno what's causing it but both of those shows are absolutely terrible.

I totally forgot that I tried watching this show, or that it existed.

watch the Danish films.

my mom and i have been trying to find some new mystery thing to watch together, and we're just kind of baffled by it

the danes have never produced anything but this sort of dull and miserable show, why would i force that upon myself?
>>

NTA but danish stuff is usually really good, yes it's grim but it's appropriate. With the british shows it feels like they're being misterable and grim just for the sake of it, it feels completely forced.

i simply have no interest in watching unhappy people live unhappy lives. it's not entertaining, and i can't see any way that it's edifying, so there just doesn't seem to be any point

The fuck are you talking about, Slow Horses is hilarious.
>>

i would believe that the book it's adapted from is quite funny, i can recognize it when the characters speak lines that seem intended to be jokes. unfortunately, they chose to filter the show through the most dismally gray lens they could find and told all of the actors to deliver their lines with the sort of cruel, common hatred you only observe in the most extreme misanthropes. i mean, idk man, maybe these shows lighten up some after episode one, but the impression i got is that every single character despises every other single character, and that it's only this spite mixed with their overwhelming boredom towards existence that motivates them

How else are they supposed to be?

Recent good Brit shows
>The Responder(pic rel)
>This Town Is Ours
>Ludwig
>Blue Lights
>Code of Silence

The characters being miserable is what makes it fun, dumbass.

there exists a long tradition of misanthropic detective stories they could use for reference. usually you don't make the entire cast misanthropes, because then the audience is forced to wonder why they care at all that people are dying. certainly, i did not care, death would be a blessing if i lived in as awful a society as the ones they depict
>>
>>216517148
nta but that's your idea of fun? You must be a horrible person to be around.
>>

>How else are they supposed to be?
They could try not being awful for starters.
Haven't you seen any good british crime/detective shows? Like endeavour or foyle's war?

Why? I'm happy and I enjoy fictional characters be miserable, not people. Meanwhile, you're a depressed wet blanket. You're the one people don't wanna be with.
