The real problem is increasingly narcissistic audience that demands that their particular subsection of culture be depicted in mass media, and Hollywood execs that cater to these demands. We no longer can have mass culture represents the society as a whole because every little section demands representation for the sake of representation in every piece of media.
I recognize this instinctively as a kid when I couldn't stand MySpace. It got worse with each subsequent social media platform.
