how was he always so chill even after losing lucky strike
>>
I agree partially, but when you grow up like him it fucks with your head permanently and you’re constantly searching for a love you didn’t get as a child but are NEVER going to retrieve in the present.

Many such cases

Actual veteran unlike ditch digger don. Roger has been through crazier shit in WWII

>somewhat traumatising childhood
>watch a man die, take over his life and name to escape your shitty old life
>live a lie for decades
I mean yeah this would probably cause some degree of mental discomfort desu but maybe not for you OP

>live a lie for decades
I agreed with this in my head until I just realized he had only been Don Draper for roughly 10 years by Season 1. Which is NOT a long time, everything considered
>>
>>216517988
I was talking about the series as a whole which goes from 1960 all the way up to 1970, by which time he would have been doing it for "decades" depending on exactly when he was in the war. But regardless my point is that stealing a man's identity and living a lie for years is always gonna be a little stressful.
>>
>>216518069
Of course, I agree. Still it made me realize just today he had basically barely been Don Draper by the time Pete finds out

Who wouldn't be depressed if their son got replaced every year? He's been through 4 or 5 Bobby's by the end of the series
>>

I've been living a lie for about the last three years and it already feels like a lifetime so idk anon I think 10 years would feel like quite a long time

mad men is a hedonism show disguised as post-modern critique of the 60s

I could write multiple posts on here talking about what everything in the show means:

He got no love from anybody as a child--his father was an alcoholic that beat him, and his stepmother hated him and beat him too--until a whore at the whorehouse he lived in began treating him maternally, and then she molested him. His own mother was also a whore and died having him. This whorehouse whore would then buy him Hershey bars if he stole for her, another twisted signaling of love, which is why he breaks down after lying about his childhood during the Hershey meeting.
>I would eat it...alone
>It said sweet on the back
>It was the only sweet thing in my life
>feeling like a normal kid

He took another mans identity in order to try and escape his past and slowly realizes that you can't escape, even if you run from one edge of the country to another. You are who you are.
>What's in a name...?

There's a million different things to point to in the show that tie the messages together.

>I don’t think I ever wanted to be the man who loves children. But from the moment they’re born, that baby comes out and you act proud and excited, hand out cigars. But you don’t feel anything. Especially if you had a difficult childhood. You want to love them but you don’t. And the fact that you’re faking that feeling makes you wonder if your own father had the same problem.

Roger is peak "mediocre white man" confidence. Born with a silver spoon and good looks, coasting through life. A modern version of the sort of inborn sense of worth that the old European nobility had, thinking the entire world was meant for you.

> fucking boomers man
he’s not a boomer. his children are baby boomers.
>>
>>216520481
yeah Roger is just an example of a guy who got everything and has coasted through life just having a good time.

but even that guy went to WW2 and has some traumas from it, while Don deserted and has to pretend he's not a bitch.
>>
Roger got Joan’s fat tits and ass in his face. That’d make any man zen. I could handle the weight of the world and not give a flying fuck if I got all that woman meat at my disposal.
