So I've been wanting to watch Akira for a long time but I read there are different versions of it, which one am I supposed to watch and where do I find it?
>>
>>216520116
There are no different versions of Akira (unless it's been censored for streaming services)

There are however two different dubs, a 90's quick and dirty one with Cam Clarke, which has some great Japanese to English swear words/attempted translations. Then a 2001 dub that's "better", but for me, it's not the same as when I first saw Akira on VHS.
>>
>>216519467
Because they arr rook same so most artists decide upon extremely stylised European features to make memorable characters. There are other exceptions like Guyver, but the general rule holds true.

>inb4 seethe
I don't care, other than the nostalgia I have for franchises that are now decades old I don't care for anime at all. I just call things how I see them and anime more often than not depicts it's characters as European.
>>
>>216520225
>There are no different versions
>There are two different dubs
That's what I mean, duologue for a cartoon makes a huge difference. Or did it not for Akira? Which one should I go for a first watch? Is the 2001 "better" because it's more accurate?
>>
>>216520297
You should honestly read the manga, because it's extremely kino. The movie absolutely does it no justice, and it's only good as a showcase of what can be done with an ungodly massive budget.
>>
>>216520297
I'd say watch 2001 Akira, (my only problem with it is there are a bit too many recognizable voices) but if you want the pure uncut context for the Japanimation craze of the 90's, watch it with the OG dub at some point.

There was a bluray torrent with both dubs on pirate bay which is where I got mine as I watch it with both.
>>
>>216519467
The author/artist didn’t know how to draw faces so he kinda traced his own face for every character
>>
>>216520297
I watched it subbed because I was flicking between translations and dubs when I began watching and the dubs seemed to change a lot of the dialogue to make it edgier without capturing what was actually being said
>>
>>216520297
The 90s dub is the best. The 2001 is dumbed down.

Example: 2001 version
"They don't teach being polite when I was in school."
90s version
"The don't teach tact at the academy."

They do that with every line. I remember that line because I had to ask my dad what "tact" means.
>>
>>216520388
Yeah the 2001 felt like doing lines without personality fit the tone better for some reason, when Akira is kinda edgy and a bit funny.

Otomo was a groundbreaking artist in the way he "symbolized" humans and the techniques he used
I think it was Naoki Urasawa that claimed that kids can't understand how revolutionary he was, because everyone started copying everything he did, but for his generation it was like he opened a whole world of possibilities
>>
>>216519467
it had nice drawing style something almost no jap shit has
>>
>>216520479
It's definitely kino.
>>
>>216520479
otomo was infamously inspired by american comics rather than manga which is probably why it looks so different from other manga

A lot of them portray Japanese as being white with beautiful hair but then Chinese or Vietnamese characters are chinky Fu Man Chus

2001 dub, easy. Don't listen to the nostalgiafags.
>>
>>216519467
The reason why anime characters don´t "look" japanese is precisely because they are meant to be japense.
Let me explain: Japanese people have very homogeneous looks, but when you are creating characters it is in your best interest to make them look as distinct as you can, which is why the compensate by given everyone unnatural hair colors. And anime faces are not realistic to begin with, they only look "white" to you because that´s your standard, if you ask a japanese person, they will tell you those characters look japanese to them.

That been said, there are some anime/manga that do have art direction that tries to protray a more realistic style and has characters more easly recognizeable as japanese, for example:

Amagami SS.
Sonny Boy.
Shizo Oshimi´s works.
Paranoia Agent.
Death Note.
BokuYaba
After The Rain
My Dress Up Darling (all the girls with bright hair colors are dyed)
>>
>>216522877
Anime people are Cats.
Japanese people are obsessed with cats and make their humans have cat facial features such as huge eyes and tiny mouths.
>>
>>216520297
Don’t listen to the nostalgiafaggots. Not only is the 80s dub(dunno why they keep saying 90s) cringe inducing but it’s also mixed terribly. All the music and sfx are purposely lowered to where it doesn’t even feel bombastic
https://youtu.be/ve-SiqRYLXM?si=HViL-Q-MpA73rQ-K
Anyway I would say to watch the 2001 dub just to appreciate the animation and artwork and then check out the sub, the original audio is far better
