I grew up with Letterman. Whenever I think of the night show format, I think of him. I don't always like him, in fact, sometimes he is a dick, and I know he was not the first, but I still see all of those others as Letterman imitations.

None of these guys are trying to be like any of those guys. The ratings don't exist to support a purely humor-driven talkshow anymore, if you want that shit go listen to a podcast. Fallon unironically saved the genre by constructing his entire show around creating clips to upload to Youtube that would get millions of views the next morning and cramming the rest of the show with product placement but even that probably isn't going to be good enough in a few years.
