First season is the best one and worth watching.
Second is still alright and worth watching if you did like the first.

After that it gets progressively worse with a few good moments sprinkled here and there, but in hindsight i wouldn't bother.

I don't hate 8 as much as most people, it's not terminally bad for me in the same way 6 is. 6 is just fucking awful. For me, it would've improved exponentially if
1) Vogel had been introduced much earlier, like three seasons earlier minimum and was a recurring character familiar with Dexter as a close confidant of his father's
2) Brain surgeon needs to either be re-written as a more formidable opponent or portrayed by a better actor. He's really underwhelming as a final boss though "it's obviously self defence" was really satisfying regardless
3) Zach was introduced within the first few episodes and his arc as Dexter's protege was extended
4) Better ending: The original ending sucked ass but having said that New Blood and Resurrection have subsequently diminished how bad it was.
