It's interesting how the New Hollywood movement predicted that they would end up blowing it from the start.. A movement in American cinema as pessimistic as it was full of possibilities. It knew how great it was and so it mourned its oncoming mortality from its advent. Aren't all beautiful things in life ephemeral? So.

>Political thriller. Some interesting experimentations with form in service of what is a fairly pedestrian, if bitter, plot. Drags a little, not very interesting to look at, only has one car chase and a few bonks on the head. Definitely less effective as an actual movie that Coutard's prior work with Godard or the movies it inspired, like The French Connection. I must have been more wowed with some of the car scenes on my first watch than I am now. 3 stars.

>Whimsical comedy (might as well just say Wes Anderson movie). I love this. The humour, the sets, the locations, the lighting, the model work. There's even a pretty decent gunfight. I even love a campy Ralph Fiennes. There's also a sense that most of the movie is about an imagined or recalled reality, rather than it supposedly showing a real world, that's missing from most of Anderson's later works that makes it less obnoxiously quirky. Whatever, I emphatically DO enjoy the films of Wes Anderson, I am proud to say.

>Talky comedy. Preston Sturges emphatically has no visual talent, and didn't give his DP enough freedom to compensate. The result is a static piece of filmed theater, with some occasional witty dialogue and a luminous Stanwyck in some great costumes. The cast really saves this-Henry Fonda convincingly plays a skinny awkward dork who gets hit with a lot of stuff, which I enjoyed. Good to see that Stanwyck got some later roles where she got to turn up her feisty charm, rather than playing cardboard parts and vamps.

Scouted the Sundance lineup, and yeah it's embarrassing. Worst one to date probably. New Gregg Araki is interesting and there's also a horror movie called Buddy which is actually directed by Casper Kelly, a frequent writer on Adult Swim shows, including Aqua Teen Hunger Force, he also created Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell and directed that really funny Scooby-Doo Blair Witch parody short. So it might be something fun. Otherwise there's nothing of any interest. Well I guess there's also The Moment with Charli XCX cause she makes my pp hard and Sean Prince Williams did the cinematography so it will be good looking at least.

I don't know what to make of this. Andre's schizo ranting really resonated with me but the fact he's rich as fuck seems to overshadow the whole movie. Is Wally simply fucked because he can't afford to live a jobless bohemian lifestyle in a Polish forest? Does that mean I'm fucked?

It doesn't feel very balanced. The first 5 minutes Wally seems like a hopeless man-child who doesn't know when to hang it up and get a real job, but after an hour of Andre's schizoranting he's basically Dilbert. The only balance that exists is between Wally-as-starving-artist and Wally-as-sensible-modernist

It do be like that sometimes. Wally represents a completely materialistic mind interferring in the way of getting more meaning and satisfaction out of life, while Andre represents passion getting in the way of relating to lower class struggles and material achievement. >Andre represents passion getting in the way of relating to lower class struggles and material achievement
Right but why should Andre give a shit, what is he actually missing. His blissful ignorance of working class struggles doesn't result in him lacking for insight or feeling or range of experience. All the things he says about language or solitude suggest that his struggle to connect with others is a fundamental aspects of modern life, that it's something Wally shares. I know I must sound like a communist but the film seems to accidentally make the case that it takes money to really feel alive.

I agree, but it's not like Andre's buying prostitutes. His wealth frees him up to live a bohemian lifestyle so it's his wealth that facilitates all these profound experiences he's telling Wally about.
>I also feel Andre understood that via Wally's criticisms of his relatively vain lifestyle.
I didn't get that personally, Wally has some good rebuttals but Andre always has an answer ready. Maybe I need another watch, it does feel like I'm missing something. The whole movie can't be one big "get gud faggot".

nothing more bohemian than starving to death in a cold dark room

>>
>>216542797
>His wealth frees him up to live a bohemian lifestyle so it's his wealth that facilitates all these profound experiences he's telling Wally about.
Yes, but in searching for the profound in extravagant experiences, he loses the profound that is hidden in the mundane lives of millions, which is Wally's point I think.
>>
>>216542848
>dying of starvation in a cold dark room
This is what would happen if you or I or Wally tried it.
>>216542882
Andre's answer to that is that people don't see the profundity of mundane things anymore. Wally says the cigar shop next door is just as real as the peak of mount Everest, to which Andre agrees, but that people are too asleep, too far-gone to see reality in the cigar shop, they need environments like the summit of mount Everest to wake them up. Some of Andre's adventures are busts, the trips to India and the Sahara don't do it for him, so it's not like he buys these experiences wholesale and they work every time. His wealth is inconsequential to the experiences themselves, it's the fact that his life isn't focused on scrounging for money like Wally's is so he's freed up to search for meaning.

delve into German Expressionism for its influence on Film Noir and cinema as a whole. seconding Caligari here.
also:

>Dante's Inferno (1911)
very stage-like/static even by silent film standards but it's worth it for the visual effects and costume/make-up.

>The Unchanging Sea (1910)
early Griffith kino, aesthetic and endearing short film.

>Intolerance (1916)
>Broken Blossoms (1919)
>True Heart Susie (1919)
the other Griffith masterpieces besides The Birth of a Nation. iirc Jacques Rivette approved of True Heart Susie and all three films is just Griffith making highly engaging and charming silent films while giving shaping cinema.

>Strike (1925)
>Battleship Potemkin (1925)
kind of boring story wise but visually this is Eisenstein redefining cinema (see montage theory) and must-watch silent films. visually they look absurdly modern versus earlier silent films' "stage-like" (lack of) cinematography and editing.

>Orochi (1925)
if you're in the mood for asian cinema and japanese period pieces. don't know much about it other than that it was unexpectedly engaging.

>The War and the Dream of Momi (1917)
a magical and cute, small effort by the director and cinematographer from Cabiria. mixes live action with stop-motion and seeing stop-motion this early is worth it.

>Stella Maris (1918)
i recced this to another anon a few threads before and still think it's one of the better silent films. the same person plays two different people and there is some neat cinematography tricks going on, also shot nicely.

>The Regeneration (1915)
gangster with big heart type film. noted for its influence on Mean Streets by Scorsese apparently, and it has some neat shots too but i personally don't put it as highly as the other listed films.

beware of this retard >>216544156, he might come for you next. you make sure to quote next time! remember it's coming across as very intentional and incredibly whiney and gay.
>>
WAAAAAH!!!!! (You) FUCKING GAY CRYBABY!!!!!! GIVE. ME. (You)S!!!!!
>>
El Freako’s daily meltdown just started.
>>
Not giving a retard (You)s is the /film/ equivalent of all the other jurors turning their backs on Juror #10 in 12 Angry Men.
>>
>>216544991
>i recced this to another anon a few threads before
That was me I'll get to it within the next two weeks I promise. Huge backlog at the moment.

Kinda ironic coming from your hating ass.

anything good here?

>>216545948
I downloaded Supermaket Woman just because it was made by the director of Tampopo. Haven't watched it yet.
>>
>>216545948
What a bootleg ass tracker lol

Dolls is a KItaNO film so it's probably good
>>
>>216545983
I mean all of the movies have HD versions available I'm sure, for some reason they've been featuring DVDRips exclusively for the last few weeks.
>>
>>216545948
Truly the most cursed "private" tracker. Dolls, obviously (but why even bother with a piece of shit DVDrip anyway).
>>
>>216545948
>>216546010
Their HD versions are ass too. Everything is either shit quality or a 40GB remux.
>>
>>216546038
works fine for me I'm not a pixel peeping pervert it's about the story not an autistic obsession over quality.

Might as well use yts then. Hell even some of their smaller size 4k stuff looks better than shartvistaz.
>>
must suck having autism and not being able to engage with film outside of the technical aspects
>>
>>216546141
Nah, it's epic win.
>>
The only available quality of Batalla en el cielo is dvdrip and still you can appreciate the mise-en-scene despite the lack of pixels. Pixel peeping perverts are sick in the head. And by the way, that film was remastered not long ago... maybe we'll get a FHD leak one of these days.
>>
>>216546187
Just watched it in my home kinoplex and can confirm it looked like ass. Sorry!
>>
>>216546237
Wow!
>>
>start watching kino
>two scenes of the character loudly eating, basically open mouth chewing asmr
Fuck this, turning it off.

It's decent, but not as good as Tampopo. Minbo and The Funeral are his best other than Tampopo if you haven't seen them.

Cook's Tours, very based.
I like the old fast-talking highpants films like Cagney, etc
Out of the Past was excellent
That, and some early Kubrick is the good shit. I just love being able to find free old kinos made before I was even swimming in my dad's balls

>start watching kino
>the production company intros have no sound
>can't adjust volume to perfection until the title cards begin
Or worse
>start watching kino in the dark while eating something
>the file starts off with a lot of black screen
>can't see my food in front of me

No need to counterbake it because it's not /film/. Slow down. Take it easy.
