Its a subtle joke
Comedy is about the unexpected. The whole show is basically a Norm MacDonald anti joke. You sit in anticipation of a punchline, subversion, or payoff that never comes, and therein lies the humor.
for me it’s when they frame something mundane as incredibly tense and dramatic>his EARS ARENT POPPING >boys walking to the tornado shelter on speakphone as the entire network holds their breath and sweating with anticipation >dad hopped up on caffeine, playing around with the football during movie night

I know the shows are nothing alike so the comparison is moot, I only do because they air back to back on the same night, but it’s crazy how much more I look forward to this show than I do smiling friends
