Do yourself a favor and watch The Man from Earth this weekend if you've never seen it.>zero budget>terrible cinematography>weird processing that make people look gross in scenes where they eat food>extremely rough around the edges>a terrific script by the late, great Jerome Bixby of Star Trek TOS fame. in fact his very last work iirc.>pretty solid character acting, Tony Todd playing out of type as a chill professor.>an interesting, high-concept story told in an engaging wayfor all it's faults I rewatch this one every year or two.
>>216533273>for all it's faultssaar
I watched it as a teen on youtube, it's a decent movie but very reddit-atheist tier>I am le jesus christ
>>216533298oh no i put an apostrophe in the wrong placei am obviously brown and foreign
>>216533310The historicity of Jesus is heavily disputed, though I wish they had handled that scene differently. Art Professor lady flipping out felt forced and polemic.
>>216533312Yes.
>>216533273this movie was HUGE on /tv/ 17 years ago
>>216533525I found out about it in like 2016I guess I missed the best threads
>this movie was HUGE on /tv/ 17 years ago
>>216533273Reddit: the movie
>>216533273Bixby's son got it made after years of trying then let it be released as a torrent by Magnet just so more people would see it. I like that.Do not watch the sequel, you WILL be mad at yourself if you do.
>>216533273>zero budget>terrible cinematography>extremely rough around the edges>a terrific script>pretty solid character acting>an interesting, high-concept story told in an engaging way>2025>anon discovers theater
>>216533273Mai man, yes. Also watch every few
>>216533273Would have made a good outer limits episode. A whole movie is too long, "I WAS EVERYONE LOL" >were you Hitler?>I was him too! I was everyone!
>>216533591I watched the sequel. I was not mad, it's just pointless. It doubles down on the Jesus hysteria shit, I really don't think it's a very interesting aspect of the character. His early history as caveman, preliterate wanderer, and meeting but not BEING other historical figures is more interesting.Really you're watching it to watch the professors argue with each other.
>>216533403In a group of 10 people, you are statistically guaranteed to have at least one religious person.she probably wasnt even heavily religious, but when confronted with the real possibility that he actually was Jesus, she kinda became hysterical, not really a surprise tho.
>>216533829>were you any other historical figures?>"yes, one or two">what'd you do during the world wars?>".....we should skip this one">>216533844I was mad that I wasted my time watching that crap sequel to a movie that I really enjoyed. It doesn't retroactively ruin the first or anything like that, I just wish that I hadn't heard of/watched the second one.
>>216533844>Really you're watching it to watch the professors argue with each other.true, its the perfect stageplay and the characters trying to poke holes in his story is the best part of this movie.
>>216533403Jesus has no history
Carl Sagan ass reddit ass midwit cattle slop
>we have KPAX at home
>>216533978two completely different movies
>>216533608well it's a movie, when you make a movie you should get your production/editing/processing covered, there's no excuses for some of the shit in this film.i'm aware it can be done as a play, same shit with 12 Angry Men, but 12 Angry Men (1957) is a well-shot film whereas this is not.
>>216533273Loved this one.
I reject this
I once saw a review of this on letterboxd that was something along the lines of "what if a reddit comment was a movie"
I remember this predated even the "reddit atheist fedora" crowd. I think it was one of the catalysts that led to them. Remember that the entire "fedora atheist" trend started on 4chan, and of course what starts on 4chan eventually ends up on the rest of the internet. Just like how Rick & Morty was a 4chan show during season 1 beloved by /tv/ and /co/ before Reddit took it over after season 2 ended. What surprises me most is that Reddit nowadays already has adopted the current 4chan zeitgeist, 4chan hasn't adapted yet though so 4chan is now making fun of reddit while actually they are now equivalent communities with the same view.I also remember back in the early 2000s Reddit was the hardcore website while 4chan was relatively tame. All the CP, snuff and brutal rape footage was on reddit until the libertarian mods were removed from reddit.
>>216533273It's really good. I enjoyed it
>>216534028how precise
>>216533273Based. Great movie. The Man from Earth is one of the few /tv/ recommendations I've ever really liked. I also rewatch it on a yearly basis. It has minor flaws, of course, like the "I am euphoric"-tier atheist arguments, but it's great in spite of them.
>>216533591The sequel was quite bad
>>216533873fair, but still in this setting where there's a bunch of atheists/agnostics, the guy with the multicultural pantheism in his house, and exactly one devout Christian, I wish the Christian were not a hysteric. It feels a little cheap.
>>216533844>The sequel did not understand or reproduce anything that made the first movie good. Thus, it was completely pointless. Many such cases.
I wonder when the pendulum is going to swing back again and it'll be cool to have reddit atheist arguments again. I really miss that era, especially the seethe it caused boomers.
>>216533273If you like this sort of shit Coherence was worth a watch
>watched the filmI just don't get the point it was trying to make...Am I a brainlet?
>>216534205there is no point. did you enjoy watching them talk?i enjoy watching them talk.
>>216533273>high-concept storyThe "story" is fucking bad. It's literally some guy venting for 2 hours about how he's been everyone through history from caveman, to modern times.Legit one of the worst /tv/ recommendations I've ever watched.>>216533403We have Jewish historic records of Jesus, we have Roman historic records of Jesus, we have Greek historic records of Jesus. And we of course have Christian historic records of Jesus. He's arguably one of the best recorded people before the Renaissance
also>87 minutesthat's with credits, perfect runtime in this era of bloated shit. it uses the time economically.
The man from reddit
>>216534135>I wish the Christian were not a hysteric. It feels a little cheap.I can agree with that, but its kinda necessary for the story to explore the idea why he hesitates to tell his story in the first place, and the "hero worship" that people inevitable develop when they believe him, especially in a context where the people need his story to be true to reinforce their own beliefs.but still, it wasnt a character assassination on christians, because the "hysterical" christian woman comes around, and in the end its open to interpretation if she even believes him or not. full circle back to "faith" in the end.
>>216534295>it uses the time economicallyI wouldn't say 87 minutes of a guy doing a soliloquy a good use of time.
>>216534278>He's arguably one of the best recorded people before the Renaissance>fanboy writes essay about jesus 200 years after his death>dude he was big and beautiful and cured leprosy!!!!!!>"""""one of the best recorded people before the Renaissance""""""
>>216534278>It's literally some guy venting for 2 hours about how he's been everyone through history from cavemannice speedwatching
>>216534278reminder you have to look up from your phone in order to enjoy a movie.
Most laughable side love story ever. Absolutely forced and retarded, cliche beyond comprehension. In fact most of the film is laughable, even the script is laughable, the only remotely positive thing is the concept of the story and that's it
>>216534205It's just a fun screenplay. There's no point to it.
>>216534387The Jewish and Romans sources were not fans of his, in fact they recorded how much of a threat He was to them.
ruh roh this movie is getting cancelled
>>216534499The concept of the story is fun, the actual screenplay is terrible. Cliche cardboard cutout characters with absolutely zero character development having the equivalent of a long reddit "I AM LE JESUS, ASK ME ANYTHING" instead of actual dialogue.
>>216534515>fucking his 20 year old student>everybody is cool with itIt was a different time
>>216534695rule of cool
>>216533273Wow that was really good. I'd heard of it before but never watched it until now. Basically a realistic version Highlander.
>>216533978lmao not even remotely similar, but funny joke
>>216533273>for all it's faults I rewatch this one every year or two.it's horrible and you're retarded for doing this. if you have a girlfriend, she talks shit about you over it behind your back. trust me.
>>216535042
>>216535142Glad Phlox got work after Enterprise.
>>216533298copethat's the standard of education now for the average American
>>216533273Very good movie, kind of an unofficial sequel to the classic series The Man from U.N.C.L.E.The only thing that disappointed me was the running time (1h 27m) which could have been rounded up to an nice even hour and a half. Overall, I would have to give it five bags of popcorn. I highly recommend finding a copy of this movie on VHS.
>>216534387Anon He is objectively one of the most-researched people ever. Even secular scholars don't deny it, just the divinity/God part naturally
>>216533310Yeah I stopped watching then
>>216533273"terrific" script might be a stretch. Felt what it was, a guy from a corny time attempting to do something sophisticated. But he's still a product of his era, so it's still pretty corny.I mean, it was a good movie. But it's not a masterpiece.
>>216534205r/atheism the movie
>>216533273Stay well away from the sequel.
>>216533478That's more of a native speaker mistake imo. Same as "would of" or "could of" etc.
>>216534387The Gospels and all of Paul's books were written in the first century
>>216533273it's a drawn out, amateurish clone of a twilight zone episode, and for some reason morons cling to it like it's a secret gem.the sequel is one of the worst films I've seen
>>216533273I liked itWatched it some 15 years ago
>>216537009More like an uneducated mistake. I learned "would've" and "could've" in like 3rd grade.
>>216534205Its an enjoyable piece of fiction you faggot. The point is to entertain you.
>>216533990why the FUCK are their lips covered in mustard? I can't find a better quality rip of this movie and it always looked like they all just had a hot dog. really downgraded my experience
>>216533312Indeed.
>>216537249thats still decades after Jesus death, and they were edited dozens of times thereafter.People even spin all kinds of stories about JFK and his life and death are extremely well documented, imagine what kind of stories they would tell about him if we had only word of mouth.the bible is not a reliable historical source.
>>216537009No Rajesh, it's not.
>>216533273>people in Columbus time thought le earth was flat0/10
>>216538526the average person back then did. only nerds studying greek were arguing about the earth's shape
>>216533403I don't like the orientalist aspect of the film, it's so outdated. "They have so much to teach us" kind of stuff. Back when there was still mysticism about India and Nepal.
