A character is meant to be an individual whose motivations are rooted on their personal past and they always, and i mean always, have to go through the trials because it´s overcoming these trials what leads to transformation. One can´t just skip that and argue it shouldn´t apply because you end with a powerful shell of a character rather than with a strong character. Strength is a show don´t tell thing and no, shitty political bias won´t undo 2000+ years of narrative theory.

Reducing a character to it´s race or sex or whatever is just bad writing. Those are traits, attributes that help shape who the character is but they can´t be all what the character is. Again Rey is not belittled because she is a woman but because they didn´t bother in going past the "she is all powerful BECAUSE she is a woman". It´s stupid. That´s not a character. Take Beatrix Kiddo, AKA the bride, from Kill Bill. Beatrix was Bill´s best deadly viper assassin, his favorite and his lover however when she got pregnant she feared for the life of her unborn child and ran away. Bill caught up with her and in a fit of rage ordered the vipers to punish her. Years later Beatrix woke up, barely able to move, her baby gone. Her rage was incommensurable, she lived for revenge. Is that Shakespeare? Absolutely not (well, kind of... plenty of revenge in the immortal´s bard works but i digress) but it explains her objective, motivations, the origin of her skills. It´s a character. Being a woman is relevant to her character (even if motherhood, being a lover and being envied for that role are only facets of womanhood saw through the male gaze. You can change the gaze, give different facets of womanhood or different interpretations but you need that kind of thing) but it´s not all that defines her. It certainly did her no favors in her journey or training.So you see there is no inherent disdain toward womanhood here. It´s all about writing. It´s not that complex of a character, not when we could use characters portrayed by great actresses like Helen Mirren or Meryl Streep. If you ask me reducing a character to just it´s sex, race or whatever is the real disservice to women. It makes them less while pretending to be empowering them and making them more.
