What's everyone's opinions on this film?

My personal thoughts on it based on watching it 3 times is that it's a commentary on humanities race with itself and its relation to technology. HAL does NOT want to be deactivated or shut down, the monolith is a catalyst for events, meaning while we march in progress, we need pressure. I think generally, the idea is that humanity, through its relentless need for progress and exploration, will collapse in on itself, we are not made to go so far or see so much.
