You pull it off by not having a dogshit cheap one, and wearing it with the correct clothes.

Why do autistic neckbeards look stupid as shit in their leather trench coats? Because they wear them with anime shirts and cargo shorts, and the coat is garbage in quality, so the leather is usally stiff, fits poorly, and looks awkward on their bodies.

The first step to pulling off a coat like this, is to wear it in the correct weather, you look stupid when wearing heavy clothing unseasonably. What should you wear under it? Not a t-shirt, that's for damn sure. A nice sweater, it should not be black, black-on-black provides no contrast, so neither the coat nor the sweater will look good. Same if you chose to wear a button up and vest like in the show, they should be distinct colors, if anything has a pattern, it should be the only thing with a pattern.

i.e Patterned sweater, unpatterned coat, and pants.

But the ultimate thing to keep in mind when wearing any outfit, does it fit your body? The truth of all fashion is that it's a game of geometry, where your clothes serve to highlight your best features while hiding your worst ones. If you're morbidly obese, you're not going to look good in anything, if you're a stick, tight-fitting clothes will highlight that, and if you're buff, loose clothes won't let you display that.

A double-breasted top coat, trench, 3/4 length, wool coat will look good on any body type, fat, tall, or short. Why do you think Niles always wore double breasted suits in Frasier tv show? It looked good on him. Look at all the mob movies and the fat characters all look good in double breasted.

They're just fat though, not morbidly obese. The reason that coat looks good on most body types is that it presents a uniform figure
