Compare the movies to other capeshit released at the time, or the WB capeshit that preceded it. The nolan batman movies made a shitload of money and they weren't absurdly expensive to make because outside of a few set pieces its batman/wayne mugging at the camera. They wanted that kind of return on their investment. Nolan was done with batman after ledger died, and only did DKR because he was contractually obligated (which is why its a sloppy movie, even by nolan's standards). So nolan was executive producer on Man of Steel, and wanted snyder to do the movie. The movie had some critical issues, and underperformed their expectations (they wanted avengers money). So then when BvS was in editing they were panicking because its a dumb bloated self important movie that had a huge fall off from week-to-week because general audiences didn't respond to the movie. Then all through the production of justice league they were trying to come over the top to mitigate the tonal damage. Snyder's daughter died, and everyone saw an easy way to let him out of his obligation to the movie. Unfortunately WB execs hired wheedon to try and finish the movie and make it fit the studio notes. They didn't care if the movie was any good, they just wanted it released on time so they could all make their bonus. Then look at how suicide squad was changed through production and editing to make it more like guardians of the galaxy because people like needle drops, and morally grey good-guys. Then flash was in development hell for so long it was sunk costs and shareholder obligations. WB is just a company run by actual morons.

I think Guardians 3 was the only one that has done well, and that's because it was closing out a sub-franchise that was mostly detached from the main MCU. I genuinely don't think Doomsday is going to do that well because it seems like a cheap desperate gimmick and the whole mutliverse thing has just fallen flat on its face.
