While that movie didn't fully impress me, Agathe Rousselle was incredibly good in it. I need to see more movies with her. Letterboxd says she was in Bonello's Coma but I don't remember her in there, probably a super small cameo. That film only has two people with real screentime.

Replayed a bit of Rise of the Tomb Raider… Re: video games as art argument in comparison with cinema… cinema can give you the voyeuristic and sadistic pleasure of watching a woman be strangled from a man’s POV. However, the game offers you this sadist’s pleasure while simultaneously offering you the masochistic pleasure of being a woman being strangled. We watch Lara get strangled from the aggressor’s perspective and witness her moans and eyes rolling back into her skull yet with the controller we control her and have to mash the square button so she can escape. And I think in my head…. Do I want to escape? The perspective and controls engineer an out-of-body experience watching my body (already a body outside my real body) get punished… I get to enjoy my own destruction. This thrill the film does not offer. I am always the strangler in the film, never the stranglette. The literary art does however offer this, marking a rare situation where literature and video games stand beside each other, arm in arm, cachinnating at the impotent cinema.… In the cinema if you put the audience in the POV of the woman getting strangled (so watching the man strangle us) you only get the masochistic pleasure, which is ruined in any case by the ugly guy we’re looking at instead of the woman. No, no, no! It won’t do. The films lose this time, it is a sadist’s medium through and through, I cannot enjoy my own pain from it.

Alfred Hitchcock was a fat, autistic drunk. His films were glued together around a laughably simple script (Hitchcock barely knew the basics of screenwriting) about some blonde bitch along with some pretentious mysteries and camera wankery. He would hardly have become popular had he not had a constant horde of competent filmmakers sucking him off and fixing the films for release. Hitchcock's only way to deal with his obesity was to make jokes about his excessive eating because he simply could not admit that he had problems with his lifestyle. In the end, the only merit of "Britain's greatest filmmaker" is how many films about blondes and mysteries he was able to write.

It's the medium in and of itself that bothers me. I'm always analyzing the camerawork in every shot. I visualize the crew in my head. That process being taken away from me with animation is like an angel having his wings cut off.
Besides, I prefer real people in real environments.

it's not taken away in animation though. picrel (excuse the quality) is a storyboard sketched by the storyboardist/director and is pretty much the animation equivalent of cinematography from live action film. these are dedicated staffers who compose the shots, then there are those who bring the characters to life, then there is the background artist, etc. you say you like to visualize the crew in your head, and that can be just as easily done while watching animation. obviously there are some bigger differences like no actors, lightning working differently, etc. but my point is that animation can be and is about as technical as live action film. i'm not acting high and mighty, it's valid to have preferences, i haven't been into animation in a long time myself. but i think you're robbing yourself of some worthwhile experiences by turning your back to the entire medium and its intricacies.

For me, it’s Satoshi Kon, who actually understands shot composition, whose films are shot like live action films, yet simultaneously use the medium of animation to do what live action can never do. Tranimation has a dearth of formalists like him which is why it is not respected more than anything. Hideaki Anno is also cinematographs his animated films with reality in mind (it is not a surprise that he is good at making live action films and can recreate his iconic animated shots in those) and Mamoru Oshii is another one who abides by the “rules” of formal live action filmmaking yet transcends them too.
