I’ve seen so many divided opinions about episode 7 across the internet and I’m baffled. I thought it was either the best or second best episode so far and was a masterclass in storytelling.

The episode showcases two characters’ very different journeys, with both ending with the same result: The Plurbs make the characters

rely on them. By basically monopolizing all social interaction in Carol’s case, and all transportation and energy in Manousos’ case, they force each character to rely on them when both explicitly didn’t want to. Carol was losing her sanity through essentially being in solitary confinement for a month, and Manousos was forced to brave the Darien gap because it was his only non-plurb option to meet carol.

To the people saying “nothing happens” I cannot imagine anything further from nothing happening

I just don't think you could. You'd have to beam it directionally, but you could keep hitting the same few set of targets over and over.
A smarter way would be to send a very small automated probe into a system of interest, and have it lie in wait observing developments, and send the signal when the time is right. It wouldn't be too hard to spoof coming from many light years away. You could fake drift and redshift etc.
