The movie didn't know what message it was trying to push.It leans into self-acceptance, subverting the audiences' expectation that Shrek would turn into a handsome prince after his quest is over. Instead though, Fiona ends up being an ogre permanently and lives in a swamp; not because she felt it was her "true form" but because she wanted to be with him. So, self-acceptance flies out the window.Moreover, the whole appearances are only skin-deep, it just leaned too far into the other direction. The ugly characters, Shrek, Donkey, the Dragon, all ended up being good guys. Every beautiful or handsome character is vain, shallow and a villain. It's just the same binary flipped. Fiona was the only exception and she got uglified at the end too.Just proto-progressive subversion. Those first steps toward demonizing what's beautiful and embracing what's ugly.
