the story in the avatar series is so intricate and deep with layers and layers to it
you would have to rewatch 1 and 2 a couple of times to even grasp a fraction of the story in the third movie

I will try to condense it, but it will take a couple of posts so bear that in mind and be patient

>humans turn a dude into alien to spy

Why do some people hate the series so much and hold it so some unreasonable standard of storytelling, as if it's some experimental artsy-fartsy indie stuff? I don't see normalfags treating MCU, DC or fucking Jurassic Park #999 the same way, they're a lot more forgiving to capeshit even though the storytelling and characters in those "films" for retarded toddlers is way, way worse.

But I unironically don't understand why "cultural impact" is some kind of magic spell words to them. I personally love the series and rewatch it every few years, I get what I want from them and then just go about my business, happy that it exists and that it makes me feel good. What else do these people want James to do, film himself doing a tap dance after credits roll? Forcefully insert some retarded immersion-ruining quips that are specifically designed to become viral?

Even using that argument, the spectacle is just mid as fuck CGI slop with the same boring injuns in speees worldbuilding we've seen before. Compare with other James Cameron KINOES, we know the Titanic is going to sink, but the spectacle achieved with creative practical effects is fucking amazing. We know the Terminator is going to lose, but the journey is full of top tier sequences and innovative effects, the whole ride is entertaining even if you've seen the movie 100 times. With Crapvatar, after I watched the original in 2009 and I have never once wanted to watch it again.

The Avengers and every Fast and Furious slop sequels at least have MEMORABLE scenes. You know it's true when even people who have never seen the Avengers know some of it's beats and characters. Just because Marvel/F&F slop dialogue is designed to be memed, doesn't make it good. A lot of p[eople are fucking tired of snark, quips and insincerity and Avatar is a breath of fresh air. It might be the only original mainstream IP left that doesn't try to do the capeshit stuff and does its own thing. Just because these movies don't resonate with you doesn't make them bad

>>
>>216765438
He's probably a zoomer, too young to remember. You know how I can guess? Avatar was THE 3D movie of its time that started the 3D craze of the early 10s. After it came out, a lot of movies began to use it as a gimmick and some even added "3D" in the title. Case in point: Piranha 3D

Just looked it up and apparently it is more to do with the fact that humans walk upright meaning the penis is more on display and thus serves as a marker of reproductive suitability more so than for other mammals who move on all fours. For them the testicles are more on display so it makes sense that the size of the testicles serve as a visual indicator of genetic fitness.
Yes, there is a theory that the size and shape of the penis helped to extract sperm from other dudes that have already nutted in your girl, but there is only slim evidence that early humans mated in group orgies. We don't really know how early humans mated and it could have looked more like apes where a dominant male fights off competitors or we could have started pair bonding very early. We don't really know.
So the upright theory is more solid, especially when you add the fact that a longer penis deposits sperm deeper in the woman which helps to negate the impact of gravity when she stands back up after sex and your sperm starts running down her cervix and out her vagina.

>We don't really know.
we know that human males lost the penile bone and that human females display a degree of sexual dimorphism not found in other primates, to the point they're fucked up on all levels compared to the males aside from 3 features that have been selected for in disregard of everything else: neoteny, the ability to deliver larger and larger offsprings, and curves

it all points to little to no selection done by the females themselves towards the males, or by the other males competing for the females, as soon as humans got intelligent, the males dominated and selected the females in what were neither monogamous clans or real harems, but probably tended more towards low count polygamy, given the Y bottlenecks evident in the genetic records

>>
>>216767377
>the males dominated and selected the females in what were neither monogamous clans or real harems, but probably tended more towards low count polygamy, given the Y bottlenecks evident in the genetic records
But again this is just speculation. There are many reasons a y bottleneck can occur, including 'real harems' which you dismiss out of hand.
And sexual dimorphism absolutely can be evidence of female sexual selection. We see this all the time in nature where the male of a species will develop traits specifically to attract selection by the females. Traits can also develop exclusively within males to aid in male compeition rather than female selection, but drawing that distinction can be highly speculative. Larger muscles and higher intelligence could be used to out compete other males, but they could also be selected for by females not only for the benefit it will give her offspring in male competition but also for survival in nature.
And while outward displays of female sexual suitability such as curves certainly indicate an element of male selection, the lack of development of other traits beyond those that aid mechanically in reproduction is exactly what we would expect to find in a species where female sexual selection plays a critical role.
Anyway the point is that the reality of prehistoric human sexuality and reproduction is not straightforward. But the fact that so many different reproductive strategies have existed across cultures in recorded history, and continue to exist today, indicates that most likely there was not a single mode that dominanted early prehistoric human culture. Tribal conflict, inter-tribal competition and both male and female sexual selection would have all played a role.

The original Avatar came out when basically everything was irony poisoned. The emo fads of the 00s were on their way out, financial crisis was rocking the world and millennials were obsessed with critiquing and "subverting" everything within the text itself, alongside the text. This was the time where it basically became enshrined as a universal fiction law that you need to slather everything in irony, you must keep a sarcastic, smug distance from any genuine expression, because anything genuine is actually just pretending, so in order to not be fake you have to hide what you actually want to say and mean and only hint through increasingly esoteric winks. This meant that everyone had to watch their tone because being too open risked being mocked, and the feeling of alienation that came with it was overwhelming, and it's only been getting worse ever since the social media boom.
Avatar negated literally all of that: it was an optimistic sci fi story that let you, the viewer, escape into a world where genuine change is possible, where you can remake yourself and join a (literal in this case) tribe that cares for you. All it asked of you is to suspend your disbelief and your cynicism just for the ride, and in exchange it let you into an amazing world. The following two movies continue in this vein, even though the cultural zeitgeist has embraced emotional distancing to the level of admiring genuine psychopathy. The critics are so vicious about them specifically because they don't fit into the mold of either grimdark "everyone's cynical and rotten and would murder or rape if they could get away with it" or the zany "characters quip every line because they are breaking the fourth wall and acknowledging the audience's awareness that this movie's premise is silly" MCU writing.
(Plus, the focus on the emotional experience meant Avatar didn't fit the mold of nerd homework exercise fodder for a YouTube 50-parter arguing about unobtanium mining mechanics and such.)
>>

>>
>>216761879
don't you mean "fortunate son"
also it physically pains me that I will never have crazy big blue xeno gf
>>
>>216768967
Cause Avatar has always sucked.
The only reason the first one did so well was because of the insane media hype machine. First film from James Cameron after the mega successful Titanic, highest budget film ever, 3D film that didn't make you wear the red and blue glasses.
And all this media hype circulating in a culture that had yet to be stratified by social media.
The first Avatar film was a massive cultural moment. But the film itself was only serviceable. Avatar never became anyone's favourite film. Kids didn't become obsessed with it like they did for Star Wars or Disney films back in the day or Marvel later on.
The second film only did so well because Marvel fatigue had kicked in but the general public had become conditioned to expect big spectacle cinematic universe slop when they paid money to see a film in theatre. They were sick of Marvel but still wanted that fix and thought that Avatar might give it to them.
And again it was serviceable, so people didn't walk out of the cinema telling people they hated it and others not to watch it, but it didn't leave them wanting more either.
And now the Marvel slop conditioning has worn off and general audiences don't really give a fuck about going to the cinema to see big spectacle family friendly fantasy.
I expect this new film to do about as good as any December release blockbuster that isn't a complete turd to do. People who want to see a film over their Christmas New Year break will see it, but it won't draw anyone to the cinema who wasn't planning to go anyway.

If I could snap my fingers and fix the last 2 movies, the ocean conservation asspull should have just been overfishing. The human Mordor city should be feeding itself with the sea, certain species of native plant/animal life should have been found to be edible by humans, and the expansion of settlement underpinned by harvesting it.

Instead of whales that talk I'd have the thing being hunted their aquatic mounts. Same "sentience" as the fliers and the equivalent of eating beef in front of a jeet to kill them, especially with large scale industrial fishing. Muhbuffalo, wild horse culling, and dolphin safe tuna all in one.

He is smart though. He accepts that there is zero way the Na'vi can defeat the humans. Attacking in a frontal assault would just get them all killed. The only thing they can do is harass outlying supply convoys and try to stay hidden. Once they are targeting Sully and his family specifically, he knows that the only option that's not death is to run away. Jake has no indication that there will be additional special Eywa powers given to Kiri soon. The maximum powers he used from Eywa are not enough to win. Jake knows the Na'vi's time is running out and Humans will win eventually, but he can't admit that to them. All the Na'vi have left is to live out their remaining time in semi-peace and happiness before they're all forced onto a reservation or genocided. Jake was giving up and just wanted to vanish.

Evil is a made up concept developed by christfags around the same time the Roman Empire went under for that exact reason that they became soft and submitted to slave morality.

The movie draws an accurate parallel for how real human history has functioned. The societies that as you say improved themselves beyond bare substance all did it on the backs of slaves and the blood of conquest. There are no civilizations that became great by being hippy pacifists. It is not "evil" to take others resources by force any more than it is evil for ant colonies to raid and enslave each other. Its just something that social creatures do.

>Surprised Pikachu when man in fact did not die on their "dieing" world but instead sent a colonized worth of people to push his shit in

Cameron backed off on an existential need for human expansion because it's too justified if you aren't a complete bug person with a bug mind and bug soul. Now humans are just mean and after immortality juice... and fully willing to work with naavi, again, now that there are some free of the hive mind.

>They have all the equipment they had when the RDA was still in charge, they just don't have the RDA in charge.
These are scraps from RDA occupation, only on the planet due to hundreds of generations of humans who knew better than to rely on nature for all things. And without industrial society, these scraps will deteriorate and be used up.

>humanity's technological advancement is what killed God in the movie and reality.
Your understanding of God is facile. Man was given the world, the world is not God itself. Nature is actively hostile and constantly trying to kill you, and it is only thanks to your ancestors trying their hardest to beat and rape it into submission that you live in anything approaching comfort. The infant mortality rate before the industrial revolution was over 30%. Most people died in agony for reasons they didn't even understand.

They live in the Garden of Eden, a literal paradise. All that is necessary for a long and happy life is provided. There's a literal planet-wide deity caring for the entire ecosystem. They don't need hot pockets, reality tv, and wage slaving to be fulfilled in their lives.

>They live in the Garden of Eden, a literal paradise.
First of all, no it isn't, it's crawling with man eating monsters and the Na'vi themselves have to train diligently to avoid being slaughtered. Secondly, the whole point of Pandora is that it represents an ideal of what Cameron thinks the earth could be like if humans submitted to nature.

>And without industrial society, these scraps will deteriorate and be used up.
No, they won't, they've been built sturdy for colonisation purposes, they've got shit and the way to keep it up.
>>
>>216773226
That's not how industry works and your fundamental misunderstanding of all of the elements that have to come together to provide even basic amenities illuminates how you could possibly be dumb enough to think living on pandora wouldn't be shit. These facilities require exotic materials, extremely precisely manufactured components, and experts with varied and specific training to design, fabricate, and maintain. No, the Na'vi won't be able to keep shit like this running without exogenous human support, just like how Africans fail to maintain even basic infrastructure like wells and bridges built by foreigners.
>>
>>216773308
>No
Yes, because that's how stuff is being presented, humans are shown to coexist on pandora with very advanced and fine technology kept functional even after a decade without proper industrialisation, in some green solarpunk utopia living in symbiosis with the na'vi primitives, and that the greed of megacorporations was what was forcing them to choose the path of violence and consumption over peace and renewables.
>>
>>216773308
The traitor scientists are basically living in Arctic research pods. After 15 years of wear they're one blown door seal away from death even if it's never been brought up in the movie outside of spider not having a second mask.
>>
>>216773414
>humans are shown to coexist on pandora with very advanced and fine technology kept functional even after a decade without proper industrialisation,
They are using the existing facilities because they are already fucking there. The metal was already dug up and refined and shaped, plastic synthesized and injected, microchips and circuitry forged in massive foundries, chemicals rendered from petroleum in great factories, optics and display screens and robotics carefully and precisely manufactured by other robots in facilities being fed an infinitely complex web of supply chain inputs. Pandora cannot make any of this, not without making it much more like earth.
>>
>>216773515
>Pandora cannot make any of this
Yes, they can now, just not at an industrial scale
>>
>>216773567
>Yes, they can now,
No, they can't make any of it. They are completely dependent on off world manufacturing to even maintain what they currently have.

um.......

did anyone ask why "the planet" saved Spider by filling him with mushrooms, and saved Jake by transferring him into the Navi body? shouldn't "the planet" have put mushrooms in Jake? allowing him to breath the air? I don't have access to re-watch the first Avatar to remind myself why the situations were different (if they were??)
>>
>>216773891
Jake didn't need any saving. He was fine. The entire tribe of Na'vi begged Eywa to transfer his consciousness into the Avatar.
>>
>>216773891
>shouldn't "the planet" have put mushrooms in Jake?
no need when it can just ctrl-x, ctrl-c him into the avatar body

I looked around nervously when the rape scene played but everyone was just munching popcorn and had already forgotten that the tail thing is literal actual sex and that she was forcing herself on him. Guess literal RAPE is okay in a PG-13 movie when its alien-on-alien rape.
>>
>>216773891
why would he want his human body to be able to breathe? he has 3 legs to use on the avatar one
>>
>>216773936
it's intimate but it's not inherently sexual or they would be zoophiles every time they ride an animal

it's just handholding of the central nervous system kind
>>
>>216774001
So me feeling your entire body isn't inherently sexual? listen to yourself
>>
>>216774001
It's still mindrape and just as violent and violating. That's why she was doing it to everyone.

>the super advanced future humans are too dumb to build stuff on their own despite having all human knowledge at their fingertips, engineers, scientists and colonisation equipment

They literally aren't building. There are no mines, they are not pumping oil, they aren't even fucking farming at any meaningful scale. There is no industry.
>>
>>216773936
it's more like torture and assault, which I suppose rape also is. But it's not the same
>>
>>216774074
If I can lock in on your body and feel literally everything that you feel and do it against your wish, that is basically worse than rape. I'm actively violating you on a full body spectrum scale.

Star Trek has done this with Vulcan Mind Melds
at first it's like "our identities merge, it's the most intimate thing ever!" and then in another episode they are like "we need the info, get it with a mind meld" like it's no big deal

That was a deleted scene where it's a sex euphemism for neteri and jake. it's just profane and violative because you're not supposed to assert dominance over another naavi (doing it to whales is fine apparently). I'm pretty sure the first movie says something about not going tip to tip because it does what happens when varaang does it.
