What's really impressive is how subtle and incremental the subversion has been over decades. Like like they were still pretty sexist and racist in the 60s and 70s, a little less in the 90s, and now it's whatever we got today
The home town is portrayed as completely idyllic and the Gremlins as mischievous and destructive outsiders are the completely unsympathetic antagonists of the film with minor ones being a rent seeking land lady who is basically a psycho and a materialist yuppie who is still somewhat sympathetic and friendly with the main character. It’s basically anti-subversive. It’s a small town in the best sense of a small town and it’s portrayed as something to be protected and fought for. The gremlins could even be seen as fentanyl or more broadly drug issues. Anything that is corrosive to the innocence of places like Kingston Falls.
