Just had this image in mind for a new bread. She's a sexy skinny girl, mad, bad, and dangerous to know.

I liked the bit where she twirled her S-knives to hypnotize/hold the attention of her minions. They almost, but never exactly, formed a swastika, more like a figure-8. The white-black-red paint coding is also clear nazi flag stuff.

Tuk was useful! She helped Kiri to cross the Finish Line!

Two important and logical things happened this time: the children asserted themselves to overturn tradition in order to adapt to the new (human) threat, and likewise the Tulkun muscle has been made to understand that pacifism is untenable. The rehash alliance stuff also serves a larger story purpose, setting up the grand, master conflict, however that plays out.

In A4/A5 the RDA needs to bring in some Van Pelt architype. He's obsessed with Jake because "he's the ultimate hunt. His head will be the centerpiece of my trophey room." He only uses a bolt action chambered in something like 416 rigby. Dude gets mocked for it but no-scopes a bunch of hostile navi the first time he goes out.

The third act actually shows why metal is banned (and in retrospect, it explains the victory in the original film): metal gets sucked into magical (magnetic) vortices (Jake's gun and I think some weapon of Quaritch's), entire vessels get sucked up into same, guidance systems don't work, etc.

The vague notion of magnetism, electromagnetic force etc which gives rise to the the various arch structures, floating mountains etc also conveniently messes up human aircraft whenever necessary. Eywa Provides.

A lesser theme this time is atheism versus belief. Jake (stupidly, he should know better!) loses his own faith, but the whole reason why Jake won in the first movie was because he prayed/communicated to Eywa, setting up the first Deus Ex Machina. Varang is a villain because she is an atheist and rejects Eywa.
>>
>>216783206
Humanity have basically been winning since the end of the first movie.

In 2 they return and instantly achieve what they were attempting in the first movie, building a much bigger settlement than they ever had the first time, and beat down the Navi resistance so hard the fight is abandoned and Jake has to run away and give up being Toruk Makto. Their loss in the movie is a whaling operation getting dunked, otherwise everything continues on as-is.

In 3 the status quo is almost identical, the difference is the combined might of the Navi united under Toruk Makto and the whales dropping their pacifism lose the fight against a bigger whaling operation than the previous one, until Eywa goes murder mode against them wiping the fleet out, including a bunch of the human military leadership this time who were present for some reason. The human city gets torn up a bit when they break Jake out but it's otherwise also still standing.

Just saw it. Lots of good ideas but didn’t feel as clean cut as the last movie which I really enjoyed. Definitely dragged and felt sloppy in a few places. The surprise standout for me was the thread between Jake, Naytiri, and Spider. Speaking of which Spider is obviously a device for Cameron to connect Jake and Quarich. There were a few moments that almost felt like Rick and Negan. A lot of people are disappointed Quaritch didn’t get settled in this one but he’s like the Reverse Flash and Cameron is right not to waste a good villain, the only good villain at that. I’m also surprised at how one dimensional the fire lady was. I expected her to be the ultimate villain of the movie but she was a side piece through and through and was handled pretty easily.

I personally think that Avatar loses some plausibility points for insisting that Earth is about to run out of resources and humanity will die out
I understand the intention. I 100% do. The idea is to call attention to humanity's modern ecological issues and encourage further action on that rather than just hoping there will be a better answer somewhere out there in the universe.
But with the technology we see humanity possess in Avatar 2 and 3 it seems hard to believe that Earth could be running out of basically anything. None of our ecological issues are related to resource scarcity, we're past peak oil and energy keeps getting cheaper and cheaper and would fall off a cliff if we had fusion like they do in these movies.
I think the narrative would be stronger if humans were there for pure greed and nothing else. It's happened before in our history and we don't need to justify it.

Colonization of pandora isn't going to be for the average billions on earth, its going to be for the Elite and a select few of the elite scientist, soldiers and engineers necessary to grow it. with only 12 starships each with only a capacity of about 300 passengers they're never going to get everyone off of earth. The earth is ruined and most people will just waste away on it while the people responsible for ruining earth will move on to pandora. You think the people who blow up homes for resources, and kill sentient creatures to prolong their own lives will have any loyalty to a land that has outlived its usefulness?

>>
>>216783879
If I remember how it works, it's not that Earth is running out of resources or on the verge of death, it's just a shithole with it's natural environment destroyed.
A theoretical habitable Pandora is just a paradise in comparison, but you can already see from the RDA that it's just in their nature to ruin, the one city/stronghold they have established is already basically a metallic nightmare
>>
>>216783879
Narrative fluff honestly. I don't think he thought too hard about Earth. Humanity being the big bad is a means to an end. The end being a escapism story on an alien world.

And I do agree on the greed part. Colonization and exploitation alone should be enough of a reason.
>>
>>216784184
I think it's one of those things where it's just a hyper centralized society, so earth is probably paradise to those rich people in closed communities where the rest of the population is living in slums that don't get natural sunlight and they're starting to riot so corpos are trying to sell them a dream both as an opportunity to make even more money and a way to stabilize their emotions like "look, a new home! right around the corner!"

While I hope Avatar 4 and 5 happens.. and I have no doubt that this movie will make good bank. I have to say that it was not a worthy sequel to avatar 2. Avatar 3 deserved to be a better movie and not a fucking remake of the past one.
For example Neteyam's funeral had just taken place and piece of shit spyder is joking with kiri.. LoÁk is still getting btfo by everyone, even in combat. To the poing of considering suicide... wasnt he supposed to be the new lead? considering that he was the one narrating? Quaritch got into navy pussy super fast without any fucking development. It's like Jim wanted a bunch of things to just happen while redoing the same movie. This dude is a great director but he seriously should read some fucking shounen manga like yugioh, dragon ball or something. Spyder is the worst fucking character. Also vaarang was supposed to be the center stage but she is just le ebil crazy new pussy and thats it..

This has always been the issue with Avatar. Incredibly imagined world and characters where someone has clearly pored over every detail, with a shitty paint-by-numbers script smeared on top. >had deeb goncern they'd fuck up his character and hers

The little mental struggle snuggle and what she assumedly saw smooths over how quick they shacked up. Otherwise I'd consider it rushed and more than a bit forced. Narratively equal footing of him pulling her hair and capturing her, her pulling her mind kancho trick, him being able to withstand it, her knowing he's a skyman after (and assumedly a lot more), then it's all just flirting and foreplay on their next meeting. All the writing talent went into the 5 minutes of Quaritch-Varaang interactions and it makes the 3 hour movie.

Agree with the rest but Quaritch getting into Navii pussy without hesitation is completely realistic. If anything the rest of the humans not going native immediately is what doesn’t make any sense. They’re 16 years away from Earth and are completely self sufficient. There is no inducement Earth could provide that would outweigh fucking off and living easy on the green paradise you already plan to spend the rest of your life at. And add to that if you cooperate with the natives they make it so you can breath the air and ride dragons?

In real life withing 6 months the human colonists would blow the suit guy’s brains out, park a couple of the nuke ships in orbit to kill any reinforcements, and declare independence.

It seems painfully obvious (since Cameron has admitted it) that this is a handful of concepts that couldn't fit into Way of Water, given the barest bones of a script to just get them on screen rather than being a fully formed story of it's own

Quaritch basically spends the entire movie treading water character-wise and it’s fairly obviously cause he needs to be right at the edge of the face turn he’ll do 8 years from now.

Even still theres moments like the near-mutiny at the command center where you get the sense that the rank and file are no longer fully loyal to the Earth-linked chain of command.

Low enough that the haters will call it a disappointment, high enough that the fans will defend it, and just enough to greenlight 4 and 5x

I didn't get to see 2 in HFR, but that still definitely happens in this one

The 3D was really comfortable in this one for me, besides the still kind of dark projection which I might blame on my theater.

The only thing that bothered me was the fact that the niggas besides me didn't know how to pick seats and didn't leave space so I had to elbow for space against them and their girlfriend, which in turn put me in a bad posture and made my back hurt like hell by the 2 hr mark.

I didn't notice any stuttering in the transitions between 24fps and hfr segments. This utilization of hfr is by far the best I've seen in movies so far.

>>
>>216785869
I just saw it, it was good. I think they were afraid to use HFR in the 2nd movie since it hadn't been proven to work with audiences, so there were a few scenes where it should've been used, but wasn't, which led to a few scenes of hard flickering (the fire on the ship at night around the end of the 2nd movie specifically). They seem to be much more liberal with it now that 2 made money, so there was no flickering in 3 at all. The only HFR scenes that looked weird in 3 were the ones with Spider, I'm guessing because they can't control the smoothing as well with the real footage like they can with the rendered stuff.

I loved that sequence. The smug look on Neytiri's face the entire time the family was scrambling to find it was hilarious. I agree with that other anon regarding the depiction of racism. Despite some hokey dialogue it nicely set up the Abraham and Isaac development where Neytiri came around when Jake was seriously considering putting Spider down. It was a damn sight better than any depiction of racism in a movie I think I've ever seen.

She's a sharp girl and has high perception skill. She was also the only one to connect the dots between Quaritch giving an order to the sniper to drop one of her people with the tool that "makes thunder", and she also deducted that they communicated via some weird band Quaritch has around his neck.

she's also a self made cult leader and knows how to act vulnerable to her advantage (like when Quaritch has her at gunpoint or when Neytiri holds a knife to her throat).

Yeah, just being able to power those ships right propulsion beams implies such absolute command of the resources of the solar system that it would be easy to terraform Mars or even Venus

I kept expecting it to be cringe hippie spiritual shit, but it handled the drugs pretty well

I'm calling it now, Avatar 3 will have spider getting abducted and his tail reverse engineered, all humans will get a tail and they will try to access the ancestor tree but instead of Eiwa they'll fins a different god of fire and destruction (humanity's god).

That they can produce enough antimatter to use as fuel is absolutely insane. The amount of energy and scale of infrastructure required to do that is enormous and using it safely for a spaceship drive is also nuts. There's a reason antimatter as the power source for ships in Star Trek, it was the ultimate form of energy storage that is definitely real.

The thing that is bonkers is that its economically viable to use that kind of technology to travel to another star system to fucking hunt whales to acquire what is essentially a luxury good for a small number of super rich people. It implies that this shit is both trivial and also not significantly regulated. Also regarding unobtainium, the fact that there's no state-led initiatives to control pandora also suggests it isn't actually strategically important. If Earth is super in trouble and Pandora is super important James Cameron sure does not write stories that indicate that, they give the impression that its an African country a venture capitalist could send a container ship full of mercenaries to in order to pick up some conflict diamonds.

he should have died at the end of avatar 2 (he would have bled out in a couple of minutes) and in avatar 3 he would have either drowned or died from the pressure

why do Euros get counted as individual countries while North America all gets lumped together?
When they talk about "domestic" box office, is that also for all of North America or just US?

RDA is a state-tier corporation anon. It’s a British East India style quasi-state entity on a global scale. The lore is that the Venture Star took the equivalent resources of a small country, and even its partially full cargo sold for enough to make a profit. The bigger problem for humans is that Pandora is way too far away. A 16 year round trip is simply unmanageable. Europeans were working with a 3 month round trip to the New World, and even they couldn’t establish a permanent presence in North America for nearly a century. The human presence on Pandora feels tenuous and fragile because it is tenuous and fragile. Humanity is way overstretching itself here, and it’s only the lack of Navii coordination that has allowed them to get the foothold they did. I mean the Jake Sully/Navii counterinsurgency news hasn’t even reached Earth yet. The colonist are acting completely independently for the entire course of the last two movie. If anything it’s a miracle that the entire operation hasn’t collapsed under its own weight already.

Amrita is stupid, and I regret even making up an argument to defend it. But it does make sense in a “AI data centers in space” sort of way, where the point is not making a profit so much as it is keeping the suits invested in a project that is suddenly looking much riskier and more resource intensive than before.
