remember, this was in the Bronze Age, but the story was from the Greek Dark Ages
they looked back to the Trojan wars in the same way that medieval European looked back at Rome in its glory days
that's why they're all tall chads who are smarter than gods and just killing people by the thousands
it's not a historical drama, it's heightened mythological stories

The only thing we know about Odysseus and his physical appearance from the Iliad is that he is noticeably shorter than the other kings and generals, broad in the chest and shoulders, and that he moved around camp like a wild goat among sheep. That could either mean he's darker, hairier, more confident, more alert or visibly feral. He's never described as younger or older than his peers. It's logical to assume that he's around Agamemnon's age.

Capeshit started it by having more vibrant colors to the costumes and being in line with the look of the comics
Is it a deliberate design choice, or is it just par the course for the competency crisis?

Nolan is a cultural programmer (nukes are real goys). I think the Odyssey looks like AI to get people to associate the coming world of fake AI bullshit with collective perception of the past (yes I know Odyssey is fiction, but you get the idea).
>>
>>216791384
I know it's a stylistic choice for a mythical story anyway but I still don't like how the area surrounding the face actually directs a stab TOWARDS the eyes. Generally speaking, every helmet designed for somebody who might get stabbed in the face either has a sloping face (that slopes away from the eyes), or even visor area that specifically protrudes--again, so that stabs directed at the face slide outward, rather than directly into your skull. That helmet's better than nothing but it is begging to get you stabbed in the face.

Can someone explain the lore a bit.
Why is Odysseus bowing to Agamemnon. I get that Agamemnon is the "leader" of the greeks and a king, but I thought greek polis city states are all independent more or less. I thought it was more of an alliance of greeks to take down Troy, not that Agamemnon literally rules over all of Greece like he's an Emperor.

This scene comes off looking like Odysseus is his servant or underling, not like they're allies with a common goal.

iirc when I was reading about greek combat and battles of the time they weren't as intense and bloody as the historical battles later on. two armies of opposing city states met in the field and had a go at it and once one side sufficiently started winning it was pretty much stopped. the reason for this was reluctance to cripple the economy of the city that lost since the winning side wanted them to function properly once taken. city states were relatively small and it was not feasible to kill too many able men if you wanted to take the city.

Agamemnon is actually credited for the discovery of the spine. He's the first recorded human being to use the word "spine" specifically and even describes it in detail. The name Agamemnon means "Big Spine" in ancient greek. After winning at Troy he was also lost at sea for many years and discovered Spain, which explains the name (later on arabs corrupted the name from Spine to Spain, because they couldn't pronounce it correctly in their whistling tongue). From the greek spine we got the roman spinus and spinula and later on it got re-corrected into spine in english once the older texts were rediscovered by scholars.

A cursory knowledge would tell you Tuscan pillars were Roman, not Greek, were rounded, not square, and still more ornamental than that painted cardboard shit in that trailer clip. Also Tuscan architecture is from 9th Century BC to the 1st Century BC - The same time the Greeks had Triremes, so that argument for the Viking Longboat being more 'Historically accurate' flies out the window. Somehow the accuracy of this film only matters when it saves money.

i noticed that immediately too. props and costume workers(cheap untalented ones) always re-use other stuff and just glue things over it. in dune for example i noticed the gloves and boots used were cheap combat or regular shit that pops up when you google combat gear. they just glued fabric over it. i think i even saw the vibram logo on the bottom of some boots/shoes which totally killed the movie for me.
>>
>>216791384
I agree it sucks, yeah, but I kinda like the idea Nolan is trying to convey. He is trying to make the pieaces look to us like they looked to the average men in that age. To them, the average armor had the glamour of a megazord. For example, take a car from the 70s. Back then they were marvels of product design, but now everyone would think of them simple. So he is trying to make a movie set in the 70s and reimagining the cars to give the same emotion people of the time had about the originals.
Again, I do agree the designs suck, but I like the way he was thinking. Sometimes you gotta fail just because, you dont really know if its gonna work until way into development. Maybe some of the designs will be good, maybe even trope-defining. 2001 made a vessel for the gods a literal black rectangle and since everyone has copied it. One day a random jew in east asia woke up and drew a weird tree and called it the tree of life, then his friend tripping on gold powder said every branch was a face from ywaeh and since then sephiroth became a thing.

Despite the cast list being released a while back almost everyone was expecting a more or less historical movie or at the very least one that tries to capture the setting with an attempt at authenticity of some kind.

This helmet and everything it signals means we'll be looking at something closer to that Immortals movie by Tarsem or something hyperstylized like that. Not necessarily a bad thing, but kinda cheesy and arbitrary.
I mean at this point why not give Odysseus a submarine, Trojans machine guns and so on... on top of that everything in the trailer looks like it's set on Iceland, not in the aegean.

Palaephatus, a 4th century BC author, wrote about the Iliad detailing actual events but poeticized. Plato thought the same. >isn't historically accurate durrr!
The problem isn't it its "historical accuracy" but more that it just looks cheap and shitty and awful.
Troy wasn't terribly historically accurate, and while it lifts some sections right from the source material, its not terribly faithful to the source material either. But its a fun well made movie with a really great action scene and Brendan Gleeson gets to go full murderhobo-ham. Brian Cox is at his greasiest and sleaziest.
O'Toole (RIP) in one of his last roles was great as Priam.
Nothing about nolans movie looks like it is going to be good or entertaining on any level.

For the Germanics and Celts we've found bronze age grooming kits, which included razors, tweezers, combs, nail-cutters, and ear-spoons. They weren't savages.

The one on the left made the actor unable to move his neck, which forced him to turn his entire body if he wanted to look around. It was really funny when I watched it.

If you're unironically going to watch an adaptation of one of the greatest Epics in the Western Tradition in which one of the actors is named "zendaya" you are an absolute fucking retarded cuckold and a shame upon all your ancestors.

'metellyousumethin. Last fucking month, I had to go up to Boston for a funeral. My mom's dad, big Irish wake, whole family was there. Yeah, I'm one quarter Irish dickwad, why the fuck does that matter right now? I get back to Belmont and I find out my wife ran off with some asshole from Philly. I go down to get her back and these assholes are all holed up in the corner pub like it's fucking Waco. The one asshole she ran off with comes out, I turn that fucker into a cheese grater. Real parmigiano box grater shit. He just walks back inside like nothing happened. So then I realize that this isn't gonna work out like we planned. We gotta think deeper. It's January, so of course they're all having playoff bullshit happening. I find out they're getting a whole bunch of food catered in. We intercept the van, disguise ourselves as dipshit cooks from Philly, and go to the pub. They open the doors and we just come out blasting. Real sunday fucking gravy. My bitch was there fucking screaming and shit but as soon as I saw her everything just melted away. Couldn't even be mad anymore. Took her back to the neighborhood. Obviously things aren't what they were before but life goes on.

It only looks 'cool' in a capeshit sense, like if you're a DCfag and reading Wonder Woman and Ares pops up with this look then it looks cool. Within the context of this history-fantasy epic based on a work so important to Western history, it's a fucking joke

Though I will say Nolan's overall quality has dropped off at a pretty steady pace. Oppenheimer was the odd one out of his last few movies.

It looks cool in a "this is just a dumb movie and I'm not gonna take it that seriously" kind of way, but obviously if you're taking it seriously then it looks goofy as fuck. I dunno, the trailer seems to have made it clear that this is going to be a silly movie.

yeah its getting very boring seeing posts crying about the accuracy of a story that doesnt have any recorded proof it ever existed.
Even the location of Troy is an educated guess. Schliemann dug deep enough, went too far and thought "OK the previous level was the right one"
>>
>>216804235
>I liked Oppenheimer
the opening 30 minutes are amazing imo. Nolan genuinely going outside his comfort zone and pulling it off
>>
I actually thought the spine was some low texture sprite someone was shopping in to these pics

I don’t know why but it reminded me of ripping out spines in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Looks like a video game enemy weak point.

historical accuracy is not needed for fictional story. Just as long as it fits the setting. its not a documentary.
>>
>>216797613
They have to be. Vertebrae only get thicker when you go down. That would look even worse.
>>
It would be as easy to put in the movie this: INSPIRED by Homer's The Odyssey. And that's it, it is inspired but then the director adds his personal designs.
>>
>>216798196
That was sort of true for routine battles between neighbors, which in some ways were almost like glorified sports games. However when a battle had real stakes, like a foreign invader intent on pillage or one of the local cities making a play for permanent hegemony over the region, the battles would get serious and they would actually try to kill the other side. Public opinion from the peanut gallery was a thing back then too; for example Rome caught a lot of flack from the wider Mediterranean world for razing Corinth.

I've accepted this is an interpretation that leans into the fantasy aspect instead of pretending to be a period accurate historical account. I mean there are cyclops, sirens, and scylla right in it, you guys all know this didn't actually happen?
>>
>>216791912
this gets it
>>
>>216806748
>>216806411
I am more afraid they won't lean hard enough into the fantastic aspects of the tale and try to cut out how important the gods were to the story like how Troy basically edited out all the gods from the story.
>>
How is Agamemnon so young?

>>216806748
you can have a historical aesthetic and add mythical stuff to it

The internet reactions would look quite a bit different if they went with more authentic and even lively-looking armour from the Bronze Age, instead of Hollywood leather imitations of Iron Age Classical Greek armour.
>>
>>216807247
Yes it’s a creative difference most are willing to look the other way on.
I’m glad Nolan is doing an adaptation and hope it kickstarts others to bring back swords and sandals. Maybe Nolan had some thoughts on interstellar and how he’d change it, and then thought fuck it do Odyssey since they’re very similar stories

There is enough historical evidence that we can say that Troy was violently destroyed, that a Agamemnon was real, and that there was a ruler of Troy called Priyam (Piyama-radu) and that he had a son called Alexandu (Paris)
