I just want more cool human tech. That's what I love most about those movies.
>>216800201Imagine if they bring metal gears to Pandora in avatar 4
>>216800035The tatted bald dude by Scoresby is basically another Lyle Wainfleet to Quaritch. In Avatar 3, when Scoresby in the later stage of the battle orders his crew to go deeper after the Tulkun, the bald guy's like, "Seriously? We're doing this?"
Why do critics respect or are at least more favorably inclined towards the millionth super hero movie while criticizing the Avatar movies for doing certain things that are the bread and butter of pretty much all the super hero movies? I feel like almost all the criticisms levied against Avatar can be levied a hundredfold against what comes out of the MCU. Or any big blockbuster for that matter.I feel like the vision of a singular man manifested into the worldbuilding of Avatar as opposed to the super safe, board approved, textureless, flavorless gruel Marvel pumps out on a timed schedule should be held in a somewhat higher regard. Now I am not saying Avatar should be treated as the greatest artistic masterpiece of all time, but the discrepancy here is baffling to me. Avatar, when compared to the MCU movies, has so much more maturity and emotion and soul. Genuinely dramatic and tragic things happen whereas in super hero flicks it's the most surface level type of "drama" with some quips sprinkled in. It also excels and surpasses in the domain super hero movies like to claim: Action. What do you guys think? (And it's not a Disney thing because both are Disney)
>>216800156The final battle is very "random bullshit go". You can really tell that this was released with like 3 years after TWOW, whereas the break between the first one and TWOW was over 10 years I think. It's really just TWOW offcuts mixed with the offcuts of the first one and the bare minimum original content to make it at all coherent.

>>216800222Critics are paid, if they didn't glaze these films is because they weren't paid
>>216800222Critics are retarded who love consuming slop.
This movie had no reason to exist, all the plot pointa could've been included in the second one. The world at large is in nearly the same place it was at the end of the second film. What a fucking waste of 3 hours.
>>216800035
>>216800256I don't distinctly recall, but hopefully not. Kinda liked the guy. But the tiny bug in me's telling me that a squid did get to him, considering how ruthless and swift and surgical the creatures were.
>>216800222The bad faith argument would be that the critics are in Disney's pocket directly or indirectly (don't want to jeopardize industry friendships, want to keep being invited to parties, etc.) I don't really think it's real but you will hear this from people so maybe I'm wrong and there's something to tis.The good faith argument is that superhero movies are a genre unto itself and that lets them get away with some things. "Well, yeah, it's silly but it's a superhero movie, it's just a genre convention/the comic books were even dumber." Whereas Avatar does not have the genre to hide behind, it stands as a wholly original sci-fi saga. And that probably makes some of the silly stuff stand our more, it doesn't have the genre or the source material to hide behind.
>>216800222Quaritch isn't emasculated by admiral holdo, varang a cute, and neteri is space racist and hates her mixed mutt children. Cameron doesn't give a fuck about what they want, he's here to do what James Cameron does because James Cameron is James Cameron.
>>216800201I wish they had cool mechs like battle tech; the suits they had were really shitty looking
>>216800277They definitely should have skipped the whale wars shit in this one, focused on the characters and the ash tribe more. Tension between Quaritch and the military brass, perhaps him going rouge for real.I guess normies need some big battle at the end of every movie.
>>216800342>Quaritch isn't emasculated by admiral holdoHe's not a little bitch, that's for sure. Love how he gets right in her face, standing up for himself and for his girlfriend

>trade convoy must be protected from raidersWhy is it just accepted that there are raiders without any question or explanation, it seems like Na'vi killing Na'vi is a fairly rare thing yet nobody questions this. When we finally learn why they are doing this it just raises even more questions - like for a start why did nobody help them when the volcano errupted??The whole concept just raises so many questions and has so many plot holes.Really lazy writing from Cameron. Then there is that magnetic flux rainbow going into the sky at the pod meeting, wtf was that all about? When the giant matriachs attack the cetops ship we see one of them crashing into it, and then that's the last we see or hear and later the ship is fine and now instead is threatened by that flux thing - what happened to the giants? And finally, the film ends with no resolution to the human occupation and exploitation of the resources.
You DID realize that Scoresby's bionic arm is a direct reference to that of the T-800, right /AFAG/? There's a close-up where Scoresby flexes the prosthetic at the bottom of the frame as he revs the throttle on his boat, calling attention to the look of the knuckles.
>>216800514>Mangkwan hometree gets fucked up>they become raiders out of necessity and then out of tradition >become notorious for being raidersIt's not that complicated
>>216800514Having thought about it I've concluded there could be a logical explanation, which the lack of loses some great story potential.Other tribes would not have been able to help due to relocating for safety and contributing warriors to Jakes war, the affected tribe itself may have contributed warriors too who weren't able to help their tribe get away from the erruption. And then further Jake might have prioritised fighting over helping this tribe, callously telling them to look after themselves. This would give that woman leading them a powerful motivation to have a grudge against Jake and other Na'vi.But nope, nothing in the film about how nobody helped.
>>216800514Some of this will probably be explained/quietly retconned in artbooks or other lorefluff. The interesting part for me when it comes to the ash people is why they hate Eywa but still do the USB connection thingy. I thought it was pretty obvious that connecting to things on Pandora makes you in tune with Eywa and ultimately makes you see things from the navi perspective. They do cut USB tails but from their enemies. As far as I see it would make more sense if they removed theirs first, like the Dark Protoss in Starcraft.
>>216800201It's quite disappointing to see that the AMP suits were hardly utilized in 3 other than delivering guns to the Mangkwan and pursuing Jake after he's broken free. Picrel was pure bliss despite it being two or three seconds max. The stammering muzzle flashes. The thuds blasting off the GAU-90 autocannons. All the footmen and Skel Suit personnel triggering their rifles in hellish firepower like that one scene in Jarhead with Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard. Then again it's a PG-13 film, thereby limiting full potential, and I guess 30mms splattering heads and sending Na'vi limbs twirling was among the last Cameron had in mind.

>>216800651They just want to mess up their enemies. They're not so depraved that they want to permanently take away their own ability to feel very specific forms of pleasure before encouraging the same for others, unlike certain groups of humans that I can think of.
>>216800651>I thought it was pretty obvious that connecting to things on Pandora makes you in tune with Eywa and ultimately makes you see things from the navi perspective. That comes from linking with the tree nodes from first film / coral nodes in second. They only link with their mounts or to captured people to torture them.
>>216800651But the ash guys corrupt the tail connection from an act of ultimate intimacy to something horrible
>>216800201They would need faster ones with jet boosters and energy swords.
>>216800156The good guys were defeated in the air and retreated. The whales were still fighting by the end, but we see some of the big ones being killed and they were outgunned by the whaling boats and subs. No one "disappeared".

>>216800434Carmella was such an underwhelming character. She's just a dumbass who dies from being a dumbass.
>>216800514>Wow what a fucking hack, did Cameron really think we needed a bunch of exposition about how the raiders exist in the avatar universe because they've rejected aewa? We're not fucking retards we can handle having less viewer knowledge than the characters on a subject for the sake of story. We could be saying they instead and I'm glad we don't have to even if it's filtering to people with no attention span. The explanation for why there are raiders is satisfied by Quaritch learning the history of the ash tribe during the bathroom coke with the goth girl scene. No one helped because aewa left them to die, it doesn't need more because if you pay attention you know how superstitious and dogmatic the fucking tree huggers are. They didn't help varangs tribe for the same reason the space whales and water nasvi exiled the good whale, their culture is fucking shit and characters realize it like Jake's son.
>>216800742>energy weaponsPlease no. One of the things Cameron was spot on with was that he decided to use conventional weapons like bullets and missiles rather than energy stuff.
>>216800222There are now dozens of characters established in these movies yet the only ones who's names I remember are almost all from the first movie and the only characters I like are Quaritch and Varang.Say what you will about Avatar but a compelling story it is not.

Basically, Avatar 1 is the hobbit and 2 (3), 4 and 5 are LOTR.

I'm not a huge avatarhead but i really loved this movie. I remember seeing avatar 1 in theaters and i was stunned by the 3d effects but I didn't much care for the story, but then I watched Way of the Water at home and I really enjoyed the new characters and how the familiar ones were expanded on, so now I quite wanted to see it in theaters and I enjoyed the hell out of it. I guess the beats are familiar but it's a visual spectacle and it tugs at the heartstrings and the battles I think are all nicely choreographed and busy but not overwhelming or confusing so I enjoy that movie, and I don't get why these movies are derided by so many and not just universally loved. maybe the eco-message and the cartoony villains are what people don't like about it
Jim said in an interview that Jake reuniting with Toruk wasn't in the F&A script and was actually planned for A4, but he felt that after Jake's scene with Spider there can only be one resoultion and Toruk simply is necessary for that. So he got all the actors back and re-shot it to include Toruk.

The squids were cool.
>>216800898Spider should have died in this scene. Cameron could have gotten his shocking death scene leaving the audience in tears. Jake buries him in a shallow grave and the kids just think Spider is still at the human city. Then about an hour later, have Spider return as almost a full Na'vi. Eywa's mutation has healed his stab wound and continued to change his body so that he has a lot more control over animals similar to Kiri. Instead, Cameron kept doing fakeout deaths, which were super lame.

>>216800514>it seems like Na'vi killing Na'vi is a fairly rare thing yet nobody questions this. That's not true. One of the whole things is that the Na'vi do fight each other and are only peaceful to their own. You do not come into their territory or they will kill you even if you're another Na'vi. Neytiri makes it clear many times, when two tribes go to war, Eywa does not take sides. They are on their own to fight each other. Jake had to go to all the tribes and unite them under one banner or else they wouldn't work together like that.

Varang would never hold your tiny pink crippled body sweetly in her arms and tells you she sees You. That's why Neytiri is the best.
The finale should have been at the RDA base after rescuing Jake. Cut the runtime by half an hour and shave off the redundant set pieces from 2 and the cringe montage of him reuniting the tribes again. Make Varaang almost die and give Quarritch a heroic moment saving her to set up for his obvious redemption arc. Have Kiri summon Toruk, this way you can still have your pog messiah moment while Toruk wreaks havoc on the base in epic fashion. Have the RDA sustain visible damage in a way that forces them into an uneasy alliance with the Ash clan in the next movie. Spider should have died a martyr while saving both Jake and Quarritch, forcing both parties into guilt while planting the seeds of the ultimate peace treaty between humans and Navi.

This one was sloppier than the last one. You’re led to believe that all the wind people died but apparently according to Cameron only one ship was destroyed and Professor Lupin will have a larger role in the next one. Also with how long the final battle was you pretty much knew the epilogue was going to be short and unsatisfying. Cameron also brought back Parker out of nowhere. Which is fine it’s just weird he was completely absent in the last movie and randomly shows up now.Overall I’d say 2>3>1. It’s part of the avatar formula that all of them end in one big final battle.

>>216801231Ok serious question, what could possibly explain Cameron's decision to so many identical events from A2 in A3?The only thing i could think of is that mantra from the whales that violence repeats in a spiral. We see many of the exact events from A2 occur in the exact same order. And the movie ends with a final battle in a literal spiral vortex! I just want Cameron to offer an explanation because I'm fine with it being like a metaphysical idea that "fate" occurred once again, like the cycle of violence is preordained causally once set in motion, and that repitition is expressed literally on screen.

>>216803470The black girl next to me said this when Neytiri was going on her rant.
>>216803267I enjoy the franchise but at this point everyone is just being stupid in various ways (Jake was never that bright in the first place, the everyman appeal), it's not limited to Spider:-Jake stupidly and inexplicably travels back to high camp via a very prominent caravan which he has to know will be spotted by humans, and of course it is. His dialogue suggests that he will "sneak in" but come the fuck on, it's a giant balloon caravan and they made no effort to hide.-Quaritch does the stupid villain thing of just holding the hero captive for a bit and not killing him right then and there and being done with it-Ardmore stupidly hazards the infinitely valuable biological development represented by Spider's body (clearly established). Her stupidity on this point is really inexplicable because per her own words from the last one, she knows that "earth is dying" and therefore the human imperative requires Spider as an in to get humans breathing on Pandora. The immediate security concerns are obvious but still.>>216803252christian messaging. The christian/jew stuff has been pretty consistent as comfortable/legible background myth (yeah, I said myth). In this case, it means that they've finally realize that those Hyoomons have got to go.
>>216803387>Is Cameron reaching unshackeled Lucas levels?he is the key to everything
On topic of the true nature of Eywa, James Cameron has stated he thinks of Eywa as a giant computer, but not as an AI. That being said, he could be lying for a big reveal later.
>>216803541Maybe Eywa is Skynet
>>216803392It's always nice to go back. The first shot made me happy, the last scene was nice (but unspecific). I liked that Tsu'Tey and Eytukan were among the dead. >>216803333>Ok serious question, what could possibly explain Cameron's decision to so many identical events from A2 in A3?I just watched an interview, Cameron says at one point Avatar 2 and 3 were one script. Then he told Disney it needed to be two movies and they didnt like that. He convinced them by saying you can make 2 more billion with another movie. Still they didnt like it. They likely cut the budget, thats why avatar 3 feels like filler.
>>216801542Jake is explicitly written to be a grunt with nothing to lose so he goes on a terrorist campaign, much like Luke in the original Star Wars. The early scenes in the first film (the extended cut) establish Jake's general disgust with Earth, and his desire to have something worth fighting for. We never hear anything about his parents or other family back home, and his twin brother is conveniently killed off is there any chance of Tom Sully being reincarnated?, thus giving him his ticket to Pandora. So he's written to have little/no remaining attachment to earth, and then he falls in love with both Neytiri and Pandora at a time in life when it makes sense. Basically just a longer version of what this guy >>216801575 already said.
>>216803737he has a great deal of deleted scenes that he is considering adding back in a future "expanded edition" for both films.

>>216803647I re-watched Aliens a few months ago and had a few exchanges here with others. One anon specifically and convincingly pointed out the individual errors/stupidity of the women in Aliens (Dietrich, Ferro, Vazquez, Ripley). I found the defense of Gorman to be unreasonable, but the tactical points made about the above were clear.Ripley can be excused for panicking when the queen approaches the elevator shaft (I certainly would), but all the same, Ripley does mash buttons and seems to summon two elevators. If she'd only pushed the one button, then the queen might not have caught the catch-up ride in time. When Dietrich gets grabbed, she throws friendly fire on Frost, the first casaulty. Vasquez improperly opens fire with the high-penetration ammo, Ferro just hung out, etc.

>>216803827>>216803895They cut that because your white savior being a suicidal nhillist looking to die for a cause raises some pretty big questions of motivation that reflect negatively on the cause. Especially when you know they're going to not win because you want to make more movies.
>>216803333>Ok serious question, what could possibly explain Cameron's decision to so many identical events from A2 in A3?He knows people want the familiar. I think he aimed too hard at the familiar though. These franchises are being milked. This was a part 2 cut into two movies. Aliens copies Alien very closely. T2 copies part 1 very closely. This is what Cameron does. It's worked for him before. Avatar 2 and 3 is essentially just 1 movie to him. Cameron has never made a part 3 to a film before. Thing is, to audiences this was a part 3. So he essentially failed.
>Rated PG-13
>>216804109>raises some pretty big questions of motivation that reflect negatively on the causeExcept that instead of something stupid which has nothing really worth liking about it except vague notions of order and humility in a desert culture (islam), the first movie convincingly shows a beautiful natural world that is very easy to fall in love with. Interestingly, Luke Skywalker escapes from a desert planet and ends up on a forest planet. "No Arab loves the desert. We love water and green trees." -Prince Feisal, Lawrence of ArabiaThis obviates your first criticism. On the other hand, one can also raise the frequent and reasonable criticism that the Na'vi are just drones trapped under the thrall of Eywa/Yahweh and can't advance toward anything else.In the first film, the early deleted stuff also points toward Jake's boyish desire to pass tests, which is played out throughout the film's various rites of passage as he attains manhood. But the original theatrical cold open into the new world and then the essential rites get the same point across.
The one thing that I was expecting to happen in this movie that didn’t was Kiri being confirmed as Navi Jesus and essentially Eywa’s “human” form. Obviously the seizures are her short circuiting because she’s basically trying to talk to herself. This movie opened the door but she hasn’t completely mastered her nature controlling abilities yet. I guess Cameron is saving all that stuff for the next 2 movies where Kiri is the narrator.
>>216803761There is a small line in this movie about her prioritiesis building the city, and last movie all she did was show the city.I think the plot has a subtle showcase that she is nothing but some fill in while the execs and the real head huncho waited for Quaritch to come back. The breifing she did without Quaritch and the golfing dude, and she totally fucked it all up and literally died.Bravo Cameron! Women officers do SUCK
>>216804477>willfully missing the point made because arguing is impossible Jake with his human knowledge knows if the humans come back he's doomed the people he's "protected" and then exactly that happens because it was a multi movie deal from the start. Being jaded and fatalistic it makes him appear uncaring and selfish in retrospect which is why it was cut. Motivated not by love of muh pandora but hatred of humanity. Theatrical has the barest shred of wiggle room that he just didn't know 2+2=4 when sending the initial expedition back to it's "dieing world"
>>216804099Checked and I've wondered how much cross-pollination there was between the projects myself. The glimpses of Earth we get in Avatar look a lot more like the cyberpunk hellhole the manga is set in than what the Alita movie portrayed.
>>216803810Disney was right, this didn't need to be 2 movies. There's so much repetition.
I've been thinking about it and the reason they can't just clone miles again is because they have to grow the na'vi embryo on the way to pandora. They'd have to wait another 14 years to bring him back again.
>>216804567You're attaching to Jake a hyper-rational approach, and that isn't how the movies work. The character can think one or two steps ahead, and that's about it. The movies are primarily meant to appeal to emotion, although the latest one clearly has the sloppiest story logic. Jake himself is originally set up as a dumb grunt who latches onto a cause, but he does so out of a very youthful, naive love (again, the emotion stuff to pull the women in, as in Titanic). You are correctly distinguishing the possible readings of the original movie based on whether the extended stuff is cut or left in. But even here, your central observations in this post are false. He's a dumb guy who falls in love with the place (he grows out of nihilism, he was never really nihilistic in the first place, just directionless, and learns to care for something, to pick a side) and that's the point in the first one. The consequences are playing out now. Your short, central claim is the most false here, in the first movie. Jake does not primarily hate humanity, or else he wouldn't be a hero at all, bridging the two worlds. The whole point of the first movie is that he (and, it is hoped, the audience) falls in love with Pandora/Neytiri. While he is imprisoned in his orange jumper in the last one, Jake slightly reminds the audience of this initial image.
>>216804897What if there's already an army of Quaritch clones ready to be deployed on course to Pandora? Think about it, it takes a lot of time to send shit to Pandora and to grow the avatars, it would only make sense to produce them in mass and send them because they know damn well they would need replacements anyway
>>216804917>bridging the two worldsIt's interesting that Quaritch is the only one to actually succeed at that. Maybe he's the hero.
I hope in the next one Quaritch stages another military coup in bridgehead using his reputation as a hero, declares independence from earth and creates an army of clones using his memory backup data.
