I'm an on set technician and have 15 years of post production experience.

I won't answer any questions about scandals or any TMZ like gossip. I'd love to chat with film makers. Also, anything you can easily google I won't answer either.

It happens all the time. In order to pitch your ideas you need some kind of visual reference, this is called a, "mood board." Usually the director and DOP put it together, it has all kinds of references from other films to try and sell what they would like to accomplish.

Any tips for rizzing up crew girls on a movie set? There's this cute makeup girl I wanna get close to but she doesn't know I exist (humble PA here), well maybe she does know? idk, I got her a coke once and she smiled at me, maybe.

HMU girls are tough, they worke really long hours, have to be stuck around people all day in close quarters and are already getting hit on poorly by the grips. I'd say if you have some good makeup questions that would be your in. Be interested in what they do and don't be a creep - You already work with eachother 12 hours a day, play the long game.

How do individual responsibilities of crew change depending on the budget of a production? What roles take on more work, what roles, perhaps less so?

I guess that really depends on how small or large the production is. On a smaller budget production pay the sound and camera guys really well... Maybe get more PA's for less money, larger productions you can pay people better which will attract critical talent you need to get the job done. One thing I have learned is, if the writing's bad, it doesn't fucking matter.

I'd say I work well within the 35-50 million range. Productions with that kind of cash understand value for dollar and what you bring to the table. Usually you'll have to negotiate with the PM pretty heavily but 9 times out of 10 they'll create a new line item somewhere and you'll always end up getting your kit rate. If you do a television show with multiple seasons with the same PM it's a plug and play solution.

Isn't this a netflix budget, since nothing in this range recoups in theater now? 2) what's the industry doing about the rising # of suicides of working-age actors, or do they stop pretending to GAF anymore?
>>
More of a faggy question, but do you have that one project that really made you feel like "fuck yeah, this movie/show/whatever was really interesting/cool/game changing/whatever and I'm fucking happy of my work on it."? Asking cuz after 8 years on location sound I feel like everything is just the same shit, the same movies, the same docs, the same series, the same ideas, the same people. Everything is just a job, indies, pro shit, and I'm getting so sick of it. The magic of making fucking movies is gone and I don't think I ever got to do anything that I looked at and said "What a great fucking movie I was part of".

1) It's a standard 7-10 episode Television budget, since that's where the money is for people that need to work for the dough.

2) No one cares. Full stop. The attitude on any set is, you're lucky to be there, you're lucky you're getting paid, we'll find a replacement for you in 30 minutes and we'll forget about you when you're gone. The trick is to stay on the ride as long as you can.

There has been a few shows and movies I've worked on where the crew was incredible, everyone was devoting their talents 100% and we all worked our asses off because we believed in what we were doing. Mind you, these shows I hold dearly never really made a dent in the consciousness at all, no one really heard of them or probably ever will.

I had a 1st AC say to me once that in his 40+ years of being in the industry only about 5 things he ever did really well. I was so releived. Everyone is chasing that HUGE budget movie so they can gloat to their friends while they're working on it and even moreso when the movie comes out... It's dragon that can't be caught, all to stay on a hamster wheel. I love what I do and I'll never leave, I constantly chase projects I feel passionate about and try to radiate that wherever I go... Do I get jaded sometimes? Sure, when you're in the dog-days you can't help it but I always try and surround myself with like minded people and concentrate on the work... The money is going to go into a furnace the moment I get it...

The only thing left is the work and my contribution within and without. So, I concentrate on that and let life go on with me or without me.

"Films" don't pay, TV does.. So we're all making TV right now. Filmmaker is a state of mind, I can apply it to anything I want.

I care for people, the industry does not.

LA is eating its self from the inside... The cost to do business is way too high, this isn't a charity it's the film industry. The Netflix / WB topic is worse in that these soulness corporate entities are spoiling the very system they try and monopolize... I'm hoping it all burns and what's left can be re-built.

The only thing Reducation will give you is watching dudes that can't work on a set jerk eachother off... Red is a shit camera, always has been and always will be.Learn from other camera operators that are working... 90% of camera operating is not using the camera...

PA is the best bet, if you can't do that easily, try and find some film makers that are doing low budget stuff, volunteer your time and work your way up. If your work is good, someone will notice.

You just graduated college and you consider yourself a camera operator? I'm going to put this as gently as possible... You're a shit camera operator that will never work... Ever... Go into the camera union trainee program and begin there... From a 2nd to a 1st to a camera operator like it was designed... You will learn everything you need to know and meet all of the contacts you need... If you aren't able to do this find another carreer path...

Also, read the ASC handbook from cover to cover.
>>
>>216806976
I literally never said I was a camera op lol. I know I suck That's why I am asking about how I could learn and become a competent camera operator. I Actually have read the ASC handbook Cover to cover many times. You can read things a bunch, but actual experience is what matters. Thanks for the advice. I'll look into, kiddo.
