They tossed the origial script (Duel of the Fates?) and JJ wasn't even meant to be the director of the third film, Disney must have paid him big bucks to come back and "right the ship" with a more derivative Star Wars flick in the vein of Force Awakens.

That's why Rise of Skywalker is such a clusterfuck since JJ and the writer didn't know where to go to end the trilogy. They were literally ripping off scenes from The Goonies.

Rey should have turned to the dark side early in Rise and Kylo should have brought her back by giving her some good dick. Smoke could have come back as an even more deformed clone held together by some grotesque technology mindcontrolling Rey, have her kill Poe or Finn or something. But nah instead they turned a filler episode of Firefly into a full length mediocre, forgettable film. What a blunder.
