>>216864247>Sci-fi epic. James Cameron cannot write a good, concise, sensible script with realistic dialogue (he is, at time of writing, attempting to claim credit for the script of Strange Days, which is certainly a decision). What he is good at is salvaging the terrible scripts he writes with cutting edge FX, grand spectacle and convincing characters-try to imagine this dialogue being written down and you will be impressed that you're not groaning after every sentence. The end result is a sprawling mess with brilliant execution that almost justifies its 3 hour runtime, but not quite. I think this is my fourth time watching this but the first time realising that a lot of this is fundamentally bad, just executed well enough to be tolerable.https://letterboxd.com/dingoatemybabi/film/avatar-the-way-of-water/

I don't think Last Year of Marienbad is a great entry-level film either, it's something that gets better if you're already deep into the arthouse trenches, broadly speaking.>>216865508Cronenberg is genuinely misunderstood. So many of his fans appear to be horror guys strictly fixated on his Canadian tax shelter run, and his haters all seem to turn a blind eye to his sense of humor or wit. I'm of the opinion that his artistic summit was his mid career run from Dead Ringers to eXistenZ. Right after he gave up on horror, but before he fully internalized those stylistic tendencies into a vestigial remnant that only situationally arose to the surface.

I'm sorry, I respect the guy from a distance for his boldness and uncompromising nature but Rainer Werner Fassbinder movies are exhaustingly boring. Very typical pre-60s style of cinematography, with a particular influence of Douglas Sirk - except the sets and colours are almost never lavish because he was obsessed with mixing heightened melodrama with the prole aesthetic, and that includes period pieces, very grounded, even bland. His early stuff had a Godard tinge to it, and he actually started getting more formally interesting right before death (Querelle, Lola, Veronika Voss) but middle career is unremarkable mostly, and there's a lot of straight up made for TV shit in there, he loved them TV movies similarly to Bergman (who was still more visually interesting even working on TV). But the biggest offender is the writing style. It reeks of an old fart born in 1900s with a personal dusty library in his house who sits around a fireplace and reads every single book in his collection every single year and then on repeat, and his house smells of wood and napthaline. Which is crazy cause Fassbinder in his personal life was the complete opposite of this kind of person. It doesn't even matter if Fassbinder didn't write the film himself, the style stays the same. I could barely get through Despair, and I was surprised to find out it was written (well adapted from Nabokov for the screen) by Tom Stoppard who wrote plenty of mainstream flicks, in fact he co-wrote Terry Gilliam's Brazil (a movie I love) and Spielberg's Empire of the Sun (it's okay). But here he is credited as the sole writer and yet it's still typical Fassbinder shit. Characters just babbling on an on pretentiously to the point I am unable to follow what the fuck they're even talking about.
>>216873162how tf is that review paired with 4 stars
Movies I liked of his were Katzelmacher (from the Godard-like period, very minimalistic), Ali: Fear Eats Soul (it's one of his least talkative movies and one of his simplest and also hopeful ones) as well as Effi Briest, Lola and Querelle for their fantastic visual style (I still couldn't stand the writing, in fact I ended up hating Veronika Voss despite that film also looking gorgeous but holy fuck I just wanted everyone to shut the fuck up, every sentence gives me a headache in Fassbinder movies).
>>216873336Don't question dingo. Only 5% of movies that he's seen have been rated 4 stars or higher.
Promises Written in Water is easily a 4/5
>>216873394Give it to us already Gallo, you fucking faggot. Also Drumpf is not gonna give you underage male prostitute numbers cause he doesn't know them, Epstein pimped out female teen whores and last time Drumpf had gay sex that wasn't with Bill Clinton were sloppy seconds from Roy Cohn. Which was back in the 80s.
should i watch citizen kane?
>>216873496yep.
>>216873496Yes but not before you watch John Ford classics starting with his only good silent movie The Iron Horse. On the way you could also watch other silent classics as well as some pre-Code gems. Only then can Citizen Kane be appreciated and you will actually understand what was innovative and influential in it instead of saying dumb shit like "uhm it invented unrealiable narrator and three act structure or something" (talking to you normalfags and dogfucker).

Talking about Fassbinder and Querelle in partocular. I assume this was probably mentioned at least once during the existence of this general, but that movie almost won The Golden Lion, but Tarkovsky was seething about it so the prize went to a compromise (Wim Wenders' The State of Things). The funny part here is that the person most vouching for Querelle to win the Golden Lion was Marcel Carne out of all people.
